Chapter 16, Puzzle Pieces
Mari:
I ran fast, then faster to the other side of the roadㅡI suddenly forgot about Sungjae who was calling behind me and the stoplight on red, and the cars honking at me and the drivers asking me if I'm trying to die.
"Mom!" I called again. My voice sounded more and more desperate between the car honkings and the streets noise.
Finally, the woman turned and I saw it immediatelyㅡthe flash of recognition. This is my mom.
"Mom!" I called again and then I stopped in front of her, breathless.
She looked at me with wide eyes which was soon filled with tears. "Mari-ah..." She called.
Before I knew it, I was crying too. My heart felt a bolt of both pain and happiness. "Mom..." I muttered and hugged her tightly.
She hugged me back the same way. "My daughter..."
"Mom, how did this happen? Why are you here?"
I asked when we pulled away from each other. She scanned my face and then she traced it with her rough fingertips. "It is really you. I cannot believe it. I cannot believe it..." She said. Her eyes shone with tears that kept falling down.
"I've missed you so much. Please tell me this is real." I said and hugged her again, feeling her heartbeat and then I closed my eyes in realization that she was really alive.
"It's real, sweetie." She said softly. "It's a long story but now we have all the time in the world to talk about it."
I shook my head and hugged her again. My heart was aching. "There are..." I said, my voice cutting in a sob. "So many unbelievable things happeningㅡI didn't even think possible."
"I just learnt one thing," She said. "that miracles do exist among us."
I let myself feel her warm embrace. I was afraid that she would vanish all of a sudden.

Mom brought me to a small apartment where she's been living. She told me a lot of things that I believed.
"You were on a mission, too?" I asked.
She looked at me sharply. "What do you mean? Are you..." And then she trailed off. "You remember me." She said. "That meansㅡoh goodness, what have you done, Mari?"
I felt like crying again. "I ended my life, mom." I said. "I'm so sorry I ended my life."
Tears fell from her eyes again and then she was hugging me. "I'm so sorry, too. I shouldn't have left you miserable. It's all my fault."
I shook my head. "I fell in love."
She pulled away. "You did?"
"Someone who saved me from dad's cruelness." I said and then I told her everything with a heavy heart. When I go back to the suite tonight, confrontation awaits me.
My mom was quiet for a while and then she was crying silently and painfully. "Your father..." She whispered. "He's the most evil thing I've ever... loved."
She turned to me and smiled. "I want to thank that man for saving you."
I shook my head. "He doesn't remember me."
