Chapter 13, A Kiss & A Memory
Mari:
That's right, this man, Yook Sungjae is my fiancé.
I shook my head to focus on my work. It's what's been echoing in my mind since last nightㅡI barely slept.
"Are you alright, Mari-ssi? You look a bit pale." Changsub said.
I nodded and tried to smile. "I'm alright." I said, sounding like I was convincing myself which he noticed, of course.
"Are you sure?" He asked.
I nodded.
Last night, I stayed up and waited for Sungjae to come backㅡto ask him about it even though I feel like I have no right to. It hurts to be near the person you're in love with and realize they might never feel the same way.
But Sungjae didn't come back last night, leaving me crazy in thinking what could he be doing or if he stayed with Jisu.
As I finished my work shift, my head ached more and more.
"Changsub-ah, what you were saying the other night... about an apartment, how much does it usually cost?" I asked, wincing from the internal pain my head was causing.
"Hm, it depends upon the size of the apartment. Why? Are you moving?"
Again, I felt my heart ache. "Probably."
"Did you fight with your boyfriend?" He asked.
It didn't take long to understand whom he meant. I only ever associated with him and Sungjae.
He's not my boyfriend. I wanted to say but for what use? I live with him. I realized now that's what people around us would assume. I started to wonder if it ever bothered Sungjae. He always have a good heart.
He's my husband, but this is a different world.
Swallowing all the things I wanted to say, I finally opened my mouth to speak. "No, I just thought I should start looking for a new place to stay."
Changsub didn't seem like he believed me this time but he just nodded. "I know of a place. It's a vacant unit near mine. It's smallㅡjust right for you, I guess but I have no idea how much it'll cost."
"Can I... see it?"
"Tonight?"
"Yeah."
"Well, I'm not really busy after work so maybe I could help you talk with the landlord."
