Chapter 5, Words of Promise

I told Sungjae my birthday was on the 6th of September and he was so happy about it. I know it's because six is his favourite number.

Today is the 6th of September and when I woke up, I found him cooking in the kitchen.

"Good morning!" He said cheerfully with a bright smile. He ran to me and embraced me warmly. "Happy birthday!"

I smiled. "Thank you."

This is the first time I'm celebrating my birthday ever since my mom passed away.

"But... why aren't you at work?" I asked.

"I took a day-off. Your birthday is much more important than a pile of files that need to be sorted out."

"Are you sure it's okay?"

"Don't worry about it."

I went to take a bath and dress up while he cooked.

When I came out of my room, there's a cake on the dining table.

"Come." He said and lit the candle. "Make a wish."

"Does it come true?"

"It may."

"Okay."

I closed my eyes and thought,

Thank you for a new life. I wish Yook Sungjae would always stay safe with me.

Then I opened my eyes and blew the light off the candle.

"What did you wish for?" He asked.

I grinned. "It's a secret."

He frowned and kissed my lips quickly. "I hope you're happy."

"You know I am."

He smiled. "Let's eat then! I'm hungry."

By the time we finished eating, we cut the cake and ate it as dessert.

After that, we sat in the couch, holding each other's hands. Sungjae lifted mine and kissed the back of it.

"Mari-ah, tell me something about yourself."

"Hm, I told you. I have nothing much to tell. Actually, I feel like I've just started to live."

"Then tell me anything about your life now."

"Okay, one thing." I said.

"What is it?"

"You're the best person, the best thing that ever happened to me."

He shrieked with laughter. "There you go again! Why are you doing this to me?"

"Facts only." I said with a grin.

"Why do you like me?" He asked.

I chuckled. "Is there an answer to that?"

"Of course!"

"Then let me think, hm..."

He played with my hair as I tried to think.

"When I opened my eyes at the hospital and I saw you, I felt safe. I guess I like you because I feel secured when I'm with you, but I guess I'm in love with you because you make me forget that I had an ugly past and you knew all about my flaws, but you still look at me like I have none at all."
