Cory POV

**********

"She just squeezed my hand." I whispered.

"Let me try." Melanie said, taking Kait's other hand.

Just then she opened her eyes.

"Give her a minute to adjust before going nuts over the fact that somehow she's alive. She might not even remember us." I said.

She sat up and looked around before speaking at all. Well, she didn't speak. She cried. Melanie and I had no idea what to do, so we just let her cry. It killed me to have to watch her cry knowing there was probably nothing I could do to make her feel any better. I was scared she would make my worst fears come true and break up with me. She was my life, my everything, my world. If I had to let her go, I would, but it would kill me to watch her walk away. I always doubted as to whether or not she actually loved me. She said she does, but I've also heard of people forgetting most of their memories after someone endures traumatic injuries. I was scared she saw me and forgot all about what had happened between us and loved that cruel, heartless, jackass that was her ex husband. After all that he did to her, I hated to think that she'd willingly go back to him, forgetting everything he did, and thus forgiving all he did. I hated to think that he'd win and get what he cruelly tried to gain right after he lost it and realized what he'd lost. She'd just get her heart broken all over again.

"Melanie? Does... does she still love me?" I said, honestly terrified to hear the answer.

"She's almost done. You'll find out in a minute. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised." she said.

Suddenly, Kait dried her tears, looked me directly in the eyes, stood up, and gave me the tightest hug I'd ever felt her give. Of course, then she began crying again.

"Why are you crying again? Why were you crying before?" I asked, hugging her back.

"You have no idea how happy I am to see you alive, let alone here. I cried because I couldn't believe how you'd been tortured and still made it out alive." she said after she stopped crying again.

"I couldn't let him win. If he killed me, then he won. I refused to let him win." I said.

"You- You're Viu? How in the hell? Melanie." She said, noticing the gold in my eyes.

"Hm? Oh, yeah. I changed him, Rosa. He told me to. It was all his decision." Melanie said, hearing her name.

"Thank you, Profe." She said, giving her a bigger hug than she gave me.

"You're welcome, Rosa." Melanie said.

"How did you guys get here so fast?" Kait asked.

"We waited with you since the moment you fell. Melanie took me into the truck right after she bit me and drove at illegal speeds the whole way here."

"Melanie." Kait said, shaking her head.

"You saved my life, it's only fair I return the favor." She said, putting an arm around my shoulder and walking me down the mountain.

"Let's go home. I think we've all had a long few days. I just hope I'm not going to wake up and find myself still sitting on that rock bed again." Kait said.

"What?" I said, honestly confused.

"Nevermind." She said.

We took our time coming home. Most of it was just small talk and sentimental value that everyone was still around and that the trip wasn't wasted. All I wanted to do was hold Kait in my arms and whisper sweet nothings in her ear. We drove for 24 hours straight to get home. No gas, no food, no bathrooms, no blood, nothing. Boy, were we glad to be home, though.

"What happened to the asshole after I kicked his sorry ass?" Kait asked.

"He's, he's in the hospital with multiple broken bones, brain injuries, internal bleeding, and a punctured lung." Melanie said, shaking her head.

"Dumb ass deserves it. I hope the cops charge him with something and lock him away for a long time. If they don't, I will." Kait replied.

"That's the problem. They're letting him off the hook since he was the only one there when the cops came. They figured it was gang activity." Melanie said.

"God dammit anyway. That, that, that asswipe always manages to have things go his way! How the fuck does one person manage to get that lucky every time?!" Kait yelled.

"I wish I knew. I have a feeling karma will get to him eventually." Melanie said with a wink.

"What are you gonna do?" Kait asked, shaking her head and sighing.

"I'm not sure yet. I'll let you know when I figure it out." She said.

Now, as much as I wanted to kill Dave, at this point it was just best to let fate get the best of him. He'd fall one day, and his pride would go with him.
