*Present*
“Whatcha thinking about, babe?” Matt murmured, kissing the top of my head.
“Just… Everything that got us here, to right now.” I whispered, and he wrapped his arms around me a little tighter.
“It’s never been easy for you. But now I’ll be here to share the load.” Matt said, placing a hand on my belly, where I held a secret only he and I knew about. The day I met Matt flashed through my head.
*Past*
About three weeks into middle school, I walked into the chorus room, missing Josh fiercely. He went to a different middle school than Katie and I, and it was the first time we hadn’t had any school together since we met. As I stalked up the stand, my shoelace caught the corner of the stand and I would have fallen on my face if someone hadn’t caught me. I looked up to see the face of one of the guys who could actually sing.
“Well, that could have been embarrassing… Good thing I was here, huh?” He said, chuckling awkwardly with his face bright red. I giggled.
“I guess so… I’m Kris, nice to meet you.” I laughed as I stood and untangled my shoelace from the stair.
“Chris? That’s a guy’s name.” The kid said, confused. I rolled my eyes.
“It’s short for Kristiana. Spelled with a K and no H. You are?” I snapped, hating that question.
“Oh, I get it now! I’m Matt. Um… Wanna sing with me today?” He asked, and I nodded. I didn’t know anyone in this class, so why not? Besides, he seemed pretty cool. In walked our teacher, who was surprisingly familiar. Oh, wait, that was Josh’s mom!
“Hi, Mrs. Ramsay!” I yelled from the top tier, making Matt wince and Mrs. Ramsay to laugh.
“Well, hello, Kristiana!” She said back and I scowled. I hated being called my full name. And she knew it. That day went well over all, and Katie adored Matt once she met him. And that too, was a friendship that lasted to this day. And had eventually become so much more than that.
