*Present*

“You do know it killed me when you left for CSAI, right? Just like it hurt Josh when Katie went with you.” Matt said, as we reclined in the back seat of the car, almost to our house, the one we shared with the boys and Katie.

“I didn’t know at the time. I was dating Patrick when I came back, and I refused to pay attention to you as much as possible when I was home. It killed me to leave, too, but it was even harder coming back. I was so close to staying in Chicago, you don’t even know.” I whispered back, tossing an arm around him, and not wanting to move.

“I still can’t believe you dated that guy. He’s so awkward…” Matt laughed, and I chuckled at him.

“This coming from Captain Awkward himself? Trust me, Patrick isn’t awkward where it counts, and he wasn’t back then either. I’m glad I dated him, he let me distance myself from you when I needed it most.” I teased, and then we were home. Matt got out smoothly, before helping me remove myself and the frothy confection that was my dress. Almost as soon as I got my feet under me, he swept me up into his arms and asked the driver to go open the door.

“What the hell are you doing, love?” I snapped, I really hated when Matt did stuff like this.

“I am doing the traditional groom’s thing, and carrying my bride across the threshold. Problem, babe?” Matt said, kissing my bare shoulder. I smiled and curled a little closer to him. The sad thing was, even being carried, my dress still dragged on the ground. It was kinda of funny, and I prayed Matt wouldn’t trip on the fluffy entrails. We managed to get up the front steps without incident, and even through the door. I grinned when Matt set me down, and kissed him quickly, teasingly. He smiled, and tried to continue that kiss when I broke away. I kicked off the four and a half inch heels, lifted my skirt high, and ran as fast as J-dog always told me to. I was giggling uncontrollably as I reached the bedroom Matt and I shared, slamming the door just as Matt made it to the top of the stairs. I leaned against the door, making sure it was locked, and all the extra entrances were as well. I sighed in laughter, and stripped out of the dress, revealing the simple white shift I was wearing underneath. I heard Matt bang on the door, yelling for me to let him in. I just laughed some more and we played the shouting game. Until finally he said,

“Okay, okay you win. I’ll just call Patrick up, then shall I?” And I flopped down on the bed. Memories here were sweet, and always tinged with the pain of my separation from Matt.
