Ch. 6-"Compromise, in the Words of Benji."
It's been about three weeks since Natalie was shown to Emma's "Heaven on Earth" and the two were closer than ever, with Emma calling Nat her "best friend". As for the others, she wasn't really sure what to make of them, but still wanted to try connect with the others. However she found it rather hard to actually ask if they wanted to hangout. During her fifth period History class however, she saw air for an opportunity to hangout with... Benji."Class, you all have an assignment over chapter thirteen. It's about four fill-in-the-blank worksheets, you can work with a partner if you want to. It's due tomorrow, so get to work." The teacher's voice rung out throughout the classroom.
'I really don't want to work by myself, I wonder if Benji wants to work together?' She thought as she walked over to his desk. Once she reached there, "Hey Benji, do you want to work together?" She asked rather meekly.
"Whatever I guess," he grunted in response .
'I guess he STILL doesn't like me that much after everything,' she thought as they worked on the assignment together, without saying much to each other that didn't have to do with the work. 'Then again I don't really blame him.' They worked until the bell rang, however they had only managed to finished the second page. An idea suddenly sprung into Natalie's mind. "Hey Benji, if you want we can finish the assignment after school and just hang out after that." she suggested.
"I'm good Nat, but thanks," he said in a slightly irritated tone.
"Look Benji I get you still don't really like me, but I'm really trying to make an effort to make amends. Can't you just give me this one chance? If you still don't like me at all after this then that's fine, I wont blame you at all."
He hesitated for a moment, displaying a look that seemed to be one in deep thought, "Ugh," he just sighed "fine. Just know you get this one chance, so don't jack it up. Also one condition, we do this at MY house, I pretty sure your folks don't want some gay boy waltzing around their house. With my luck I'd probably burst into flames once I step foot inside that house."
"Deal, let me just call my Mother and tell her," she said while chuckling a little at his small attempt at humor. Plans were made and before too long the school day was over. After gathering her belongings, she met with Benji at his locker. "So are you're parents coming to pick us up, or do you ride the bus?-"
"Actually blondie I walk home, you're also walkin' with me so let's get going." He answered abruptly. With only a simple nod, she followed after him.
"So what's your family like?" She asked trying to make small talk.
"Imagine a bunch of hillbillies that do nothing but eat dinner and shout insults at each other." He deadpanned in monotone voice.
"Hillbillies?-"
"We moved from Oklahoma when I was about twelve. However my folks, my Mom especially never really forgot their hickish attitude." He explained as they continued to walk. After about five minutes of walking they arrived at a small house. "Well here we are, my humble abode."
"Seems cozy," she replied, not able to say much else.
"Come on lets go in," as they walked inside they both took notice how the house seemed empty. "I think my Dad's at work and my Mom's at the store or something, why don't we just-"
