Chapter 5 Mini Victories

The words kept echoing in Tamera's head "am not your friend. I never was." Tamera decided to unpack and set up her new room. Tamera then laid down on her bed and put her headphones on. Finally sleep took over and she fell asleep into a dream."Tamera, come here please we need to go." Called Tamera's mom, Amelia. A ten year old version of Tamera came running down stairs into her mother's arms. Tamera's dad, Calvin was already in the car with Chris. They drove for about an half hour when they came to a stop at a huge building. They walked in and were greeted by a familiar face, Trent but younger. "Doctors, are you to go over the security system being set up for the serum?" Trent asked. "Yes." Calvin said leading his family to follow Trent. They went down in an elevator to the lowest level and all got out. They up to a set of steel doors with a pad lock asking for a four digit number. Amelia looked at Calvin then typed in a four digit number into the pad lock. Accepting the pass code the steel doors opened letting them pass.

Suddenly Tamera's dream was interrupted by a knock on the door. Getting up Tamera went to answer the door. When she opened the door she found Kevin standing there with a silly grin on his face. "Are you ready to eat? Breakfast is served from seven to ten. Plus school starts at eight." He said. "Just give me ten minutes." Tamera said closing the door. She quickly got dressed in jean shorts and a blue spaghetti strap shirt. While getting dressed she thought about her dream and how it felt more like a memory than a dream. Once dressed she followed Kevin to the cafeteria to eat breakfast.

After breakfast, Kevin went to get his car to got to school. While waiting in the garage Tamera noticed Jared get in his own truck and to drive to school. Kevin pulled around to the front and picked up Tamera. Getting in Kevin said to Tamera "Why don't we get to know one another better?" Without looking a him Tamera said "You don't have to pretend to be my friend like Jared. I have had enough bull crap to last me another fake lifetime." Laughing Kevin said "Jared may seem heartless but he's not such a bad guy. He's actually pretty cool! Think of it like this, Jared wasn't forced to take protecting you for a job. Plus who said I don't want to be your friend?" "Okay, so if he needed to protect me why did he choose to be friends with the people who hate me most, such as Claire?" Tamera said with an annoyed voice. "Jared got to pick who his other friends were and who his girlfriend was. Not to be mean but he wanted other friends more his type." Kevin said. "You mean he actually likes his friends and it's not just an act. And he wanted Claire to be his girlfriend?" Tamera said astonished. "You sound a little jealous." Kevin said in a playful tone. "Am not! It's just that Claire is such a jerk! Why would anyone want to date her? Well, since Jared and I aren't friends I guess I don't have to pretend to like her. No more hiding in the shadows it's my turn to stand up to her." Tamera said with a determined look on her eye.

When they got to school Tamera went straight to her first class and sat right in Claire's usual seat. It wasn't anything special but it was Tamera's way of rebelling against the popular kids. When Claire got to the class with Jared complete shock fell on her face. "Hey Shorty, your in the wrong seat!" She yelled at Tamera. "Really, because I don't see your name on it." Tamera said smiling at Claire and Jared. The bell for class to start rang and Claire was still standing by the desk not wanting to move. The teacher then walked on and told Claire to take a seat and she did. When Tamera looked over at Claire she was flipping her off. This was a mini victory for Tamera.

At lunch Tamera sat with Kevin. About five minutes into lunch Jared walked over to Tamera. "Look, I get your mad at me but you don't have to take out on my girlfriend." Jared said looking at Tamera. "This isn't about getting back at you. Its about letting Claire know how I have always felt about her. Without having to worry about how you feel ." Tamera said smiling at Jared. Rolling his eyes Jared walked away back to Claire. Through out the day Tamera stood up to Claire.
