"Baking a cake" requested by TheDeadliestRainbow
"Alice! John is here for you!" Martha yelled up the stairs to her adopted son.
"Coming!" Alex yelled back, a wide smile on his face as he slipped his sweatshirt over his binder. He's been eagerly waiting for John the entire day and now excited energy shot through his body, they've been trying to meet up to make this cake for a month.
Alex smiled to himself in the mirror, feeling particularly confident today, and darted out of his room and down the stairs. When he reached the living room, John was sitting on the couch with Martha. Upon seeing him, she smiled and excused herself as she went upstairs, kissing her son's head as she passed and reminding him to be careful.
"Always am," he teased before turning his attention to John, "Are you ready to bake a freaking cake, or what?"
John laughed and followed Alex to the kitchen, "Girl, you don't even know."
Alexander cleared his throat as they washed their hands. After, he read from a printed out recipe and gathered the ingredients from around the kitchen.
Meanwhile, John preheated the oven and got out measuring cups, bowls, and everything else they'd need. The two stared at the recipe for a few seconds, Alex has helped Lafayette bake before but neither of the boys have actually baked by themselves.
"This is going to be a mess," John smiled.
Alex dragged out the word "yeah" and laughed, "But go hard or go home, am I right?"
John laughed and nodded, watching as Alex began to grease and flour their pan.
"3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 3/4 teaspoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda..." John read as he poured ingredients into a bowl.
"Two cups of flour," Alex bopped John's nose, leaving a dot of flour on his nose.
"Two," John repeated, flicking flour on Alex's cheek.
Alex scoffed, "You're so lucky Laf would kill me for making a mess of his kitchen."
John stuck his tongue out and began mixing the ingredients with a smile. "Shit, this almost smells as sweet as you."
"Yeah, okay. Like that's possible." Alex teased.
Sometimes they felt a little bad flirting with someone who wasn't their soulmate, but did it really matter if they didn't meet yet?
In a bigger bowl, Alex began adding butter and vanilla. He almost cracked the egg when John stopped him.
"Can I do it?"
"Of course." Alex handed John the egg and moved out of his way.
"So, how do I do this?" John inspected the egg in his hand.
"You've never cracked an egg before?"
"Nah, dad says baking is for girls." John scoffed.
Alex smiled and wrapped his arms around John's. Slowly, he directed him on carefully cracking the egg on the side of the bowl and using his other hand to pull it open.
"You're so extra." John teased, suppressing the urge to kiss his best friend right then and there. Their feelings didn't make sense, but there was simply no denying them.
"Oh, like you're not?" Alex grabbed the egg from John and threw it in the garbage. He washed his hands again, "Can you start mixing that?"
John hummed a "mhm" and began mixing as Alex gradually added the other bowl to the mix. When they batter was finally smooth, Alex carefully poured it into their pan before placing the cake into the oven and shutting the door.
After ten minutes of the boys talking about their day, the smell called Lafayette into the kitchen, "Alexander, are you baking without m- Laurens?"
"Alexander?" John asked.
Alex froze for a few seconds, took a deep breath, and sighed. He wasn't particularly upset about Laf accidentally outing him since he was planning on telling John soon anyway, he just wasn't picturing it going like this, "Yeah, Alexander."
A pit formed in Lafayette's stomach, "Mon ami, I am so sorry. I didn't know our dear Laurens was here, I-"
"It's alright, Laf." Alex gave him a small smile, "I'll talk you later, okay?"
Lafayette nodded with an apologetic look and ran upstairs.
"Wait, but-" John started.
"I'm trans, John." Alex spat out, nervously playing with his hands.
"Alexander," John whispered.
"I hate the name Alice, it makes me so uncomfortable and so do female pronouns. They're just not me and I always knew something was wrong but I just couldn't pin point it until this year and-"
"Alexander!" John yelled, stopping Alex from going on a rant, "What does your tattoo say?"
Alex raised an eyebrow "My soulmate tattoo?"
"What other tattoo, you dummy?" John smirked and lifted his shirt just enough to see Alexander scribbled next to his hip bone.
Alex gaped in disbelief before tugging at his sweatshirt so John could see his name written on his collarbone.
The two stared at each other for a few seconds before John pulled Alexander into a tight hug. Alex never told John about his tattoo because he figured he would have reacted to the name "Alice". But Alexander's name was never truly Alice.
