Alexander jumped in his seat at the sudden noise that seemed to echo through the lifeless library. It was a loud thud that had to have come from three or four bookcases over.

He glanced at the bottom of his laptop screen to find that it was around three in the morning. Shocked to discover that everyone was long gone, Alexander shook his head at himself. He must have been too engrossed in his paper to notice the occurrence of their absences. Oh well.

Suddenly, there was a long groan depicting a combination of pain and annoyance. Laughing to himself, Alexander quietly made his way through the library to stop before the bookcase where the sound emerged from seconds ago. He stealthily removed a thin book in order to peer into the vacant spot in the shelf. This revealed the back of a young man who seemed to be rubbing his head, the 'thud!' must have been a result from him falling asleep while leaning on his arm.

Alexander scoffed, a small noise of entertainment rather than of annoyance, when the boy at the table abruptly shot up from his chair and spun around. Alexander swiftly moved away from the open spot on the shelf in order to avoid being seen.

"I know someone's there!" The boy called out, a Brooklyn accent marking his lips.

He pressed on when Alexander remained silent, "If you're looking for money then remember where you are- I'm a college kid, I don't have any!"

A small laugh escaped Alexander's lips as he slowly rose to his feet, "I'm coming out, okay? I'm not trying to hurt you."

He left his hiding spot with his hands resting on top of his head to signal peace. Alexander saw the back of the boy's head but was not expecting to see such a beautiful young man standing before him, a million freckles scattered about his face. He was even adorable with a messy, curly bun and bags under his tired hazel eyes. How on Earth did he look after a proper night's rest? The air grew awkward as Alexander took his time to process the man in front of him, the situation slipping from his mind.

"Well? Who are you?" The freckled boy spoke, suddenly flustered.

"Oh, uh," Alex let one hand drop from his head and rubbed the back of his neck with the other, it felt odd not whispering in a Library. "Alexander Hamilton. I'm new, this was only my second week of University. First year."

"John Laurens," he smiled and stuck out his hand, "I've been here the entire semester, second year."

A grin spread across Alex's face as he shook Lauren's hand. It quickly disappeared when the older boy asked if there was any reason he was spying on him and for how long he was behind the bookcase.

A tint of red grew on top of Alexander's tan cheeks but he managed to act smoothly and simply stated the facts, "I was doing work when I heard a thud followed by groaning so I decided to see what was going on. I was only behind the shelves for a few seconds, I just didn't want to be that person in a horror movie that dies from blatantly walking over to their own doom. You can't blame me for hiding, a pained groan is pretty sketchy to hear in the vacant library at three in the morning, you know." The two men shared a light laugh.

"Well, I should get back to my dorm, you should too." John spoke up while turning to collect his papers. He mentally punched himself for panicking and failing to continue the conversation with the adorable freshman.

"Yeah, uh, it was nice meeting you!"

"You too!" Alexander heard John yell as he retreated back to his table. The two men exited the building side-by-side, John lingering longer than necessary just to have the opportunity to speak to Alexander again.

They exchanged grins followed by a "goodnight!" and began going their separate ways. Alexander, however, stared into the night before calling out "Uhhh, John?" then quieter "It was "John", right?"
