Smash the mirror. Trip over the cat. Duck under the ladder. Fall out the window... into his arms, two floors down.
There were shivers and tendrils of electricity traveling throughout my body at rapid fire speeds. My heart was barely racing from the two story drop, instead it was bursting into flames from the moments after the free fall. The night air was cool against my skin, sending goosebumps all over my arms ,but the warmth coming from Tobias's arms and chest as it pressed against me was battling the breeze and easily winning. It didn't take long for me to realize that this was where I really belonged, safely tucked in his arms, in Tobias's arms. From the first day that I chose to leave the abnegation domes to now, as the Dauntless lifestyle slowly takes its toll on me. In these few weeks I had been uncertain about many things, but one thing stayed certain, and it is that I love Tobias, wholeheartedly, and undoubtedly.
He had caught me with such ease that it was hard to believe that I had fallen from two stories up, and not suffered even the slightest of injuries. They chose me to join the elite group. The group that would eventually and most likely end up dead. We would be the ones to fight for of the Dauntless and overthrow the Erudite, Amity and what was left of the Candor's army.
Tobias put me down safely on the overgrown grass beneath my window, suddenly the cold was seeping through my clothes, and making me shiver all over again. Now don't get me wrong I really did like the feeling of the cold still night, perhaps not as much as the warmth of Tobias, but nevertheless to me the cold felt free. It felt good. The silent cold night made me want to run. It made me feel confidant and also freed my mind of the thousands of problems holding me down. It wouldn't even matter if I tripped, because Tobias was there to catch me, he would always be there for me. I would always be there for him. A smile crept up to my lips and without another hesitation I started running for the woods.
The trees were easy to avoid, and the branches were easy to duck, but the hardest to dodge were the roots. I had already tripped on a dozen, and we were just barely entering the forest. I ran like never before, the air flowing through my hair, tossing it around and not too mention messing it up completely. This was a light jog but like nothing that I had ever experienced. It was kind of like a practice, and there was no chance that we could be killed tonight, but the grim atmosphere was making it seem all too real. There was a cluster of trees ahead and I could see Uriah's back as he darted down the path disappearing behind the overgrown tangle. I was just about to follow him when Tobias grabbed me by the arm and stopped from behind.
"Tris, be careful!"
My head whipped around and my eyes locked on Tobias's concerned ones. At first I felt a stubborn impulse and the need to tell him that I was capable of taking care of myself, but as my gaze settled on the patch of wood in front of my feet I could see that there was a log. A long and thin log acting as a bridge over a bottomless lifeless pit.
"Oh" I didn't see that before.
Carefully, one foot ahead of the other, I balanced my way over to the middle of the log where there was a curve and a dip. I chose to jump over it and my foot barely landed on the other side. I let out a shaky breath and looked back at Tobias with a thankful smile which died as soon as it surfaced. I didn't see what happened before, but my eyes quickly widened as he lost his footing. I reached forward and grabbed his arm in an attempt to steady him, but it just wasn't enough. Tobias lost his footing and started falling...
The fear in his eyes was barely visible and if I didn't know about his fear of heights I wouldn't have even noticed it. For a moment it seemed as if he had already accepted death, his dark blue eyes seemed to be lost , but Luckily he had quick reflexes and was able to, at the last second, grab onto a protruding branch. He hoisted himself up and recovered so quickly that I realized I had been blocking the path.
On the other side of the cluster there was a cliff side overlooking the sea. The rocks below were jagged and slippery, one wrong move and I could be speared and dead before the sun was up. As we started down the side towards the rocks Lauren had managed to slide into the spot in front of me. She looked behind her and gave me the death glare. Then she looked behind me, and her envious gaze settled on the love of my life Tobias...
