Chapter Seventeen-
The week went by faster than I thought it would. Whenever I wasn’t doing homework, I was eating, sleeping or Ryan was giving me more biology to do. It was nice though because afterschool he would come and tutor Marnie from my books, so she knew what was going on in my lessons and she would be ahead for when she officially started school next year. But at least I know she’ll be popular because half the school already know her as Mollie’s little sister or the girl that arrived a year too early.
Marnie begged me to dye her hair for her the night I got out of the medical suite so that everyone would see her with the same colour hair as me, and she’d like a mini-me. She’s even let a few people call her Marnie. A few meaning Tess, Harvey, Dylan, Freddie and Ryan. If anybody asks why she let’s Ryan call her Marnie and not Mia she’s going to say that it’s because he’s tutoring her everyday.
Anyway, now I’m at Ryan’s house. He’s teaching Marnie to cook, he denies he’s good, but his food is actually to die for. And while they’re doing that I grab my favourite dark teal Topshop coat with the black faux fur collar that I got in the sales. “I’m just going out to get some pop tarts.” I call to them, I can hear their murmured responses whilst the concentrate on the food. They’re both used to my addiction to pop tarts now. I will eat any flavour as long as it has the icing stuff on top. The plain ones are disgusting.
I grabbed my keys (yeah, Ryan got Marnie and I our own sets of keys!) and jogged to the elevator, which plummeted me to the ground floor. As soon as I was out of the lift I walked casually towards the park across the street. I love winter in England. The warm street lights glow illuminating joggers faces in a bright orange, the sky turns to a french navy and the crisp air is just cold enough to clear your head of any bad thoughts, and fills you with clarity. I’ve been sneaking out to sit outside at night recently, ever since I cut myself. I don’t want to sleep just in case of the nightmares so I’ve been living on adrenaline and coffee, drinking it at night sitting on the hill on the school field, except tonight I’m in the park. I know everyone’s worried about me; it’s not a secret I haven’t been sleeping. Ryan’s been begging me to at least try. So tonight I’ll give it one attempt, because I can sleep in his arms, which never gave me nightmares before. It sounds weird to normal people that I’m going to go to sleep, but for me it’s a big deal. Sleep is a safe haven where you can get away from everything going on in your life and just be at peace. My sleep isn’t like that, I always used to dread going to sleep, and nightmares plague me. So seeing as I’ve opened up to a teacher, Ryan’s signed me up to visit a councillor, which means I have to choose one subject to drop. And I have no idea what one.
When I said the air fills you with clarity, I meant fills normal people with clarity. My mind just wanders constantly from thought to thought. I looked around myself and saw a figure walking towards me, when he neared I saw it was Ryan and smiled. “Hi.”
“Hi Doll, I thought you’d be here.”
“How’d you know?”
“For the past week you’ve spent all night sitting outside and you wonder why I guessed you were here?”
“Sorry, how was cooking?”
“Good, I just sent put Marnie in bed, did you know it’s almost ten?”
“Wow, I’ve been out here for ages.”
“Mmmm, come home now Mollie, you need some sleep.” He helped me up off the cold damp ground and held my hand all the way back to the apartment.
