Still Wednesday's P.O.V.
As Percy and I skipped up to Grover, I cannot believe what he said:
"Sorry, guys, I was gonna call to tell you the bus already left, but I figured I could just call a cab."
"WHAT?!?!? WE DON'T HAVE TIME TO CALL A CAB!" I yelled.
Just then, a man sitting at an outside table at the cafe stood up and took his trench coat off.
"I could give you three a ride to school in my cab," the man said. "I couldn't help overhearing you missed the bus and needed a ride to school. What do you say? I won't even charge for it."
"Okay, sure!" I said.
"Umm, I don't know..." Said Percy. There was that look again, that uneasy look that made him look like he was expecting something dangerous to happen, he just didn't know what.
"Come on Perce, do you want another detention for being late?" Grover persueded.
"Well, no but- I guess it couldn't hurt."
"Excellent, excellent. My cab is just right over here. Hehehe." said the trench coat man. I was starting to have second thoughts about this, but I didn't mention it.
The man led us to a dingy and beat-up taxi. We got in and sat close together in the back seat because the doors and front seats were so dirty. I tried to look out the window, but it was so grimy and dusty I couldn't even see out. I looked past Grover and Percy to the window on the other side, and saw scratch marks, as if someone was frantically trying to get out. I didn't blame them. The inside of the cab smelled like a cross between a dead walrus in the middle of the desert and a wet hobo.
"So where to, kids?" said the trench coat man as he started to drive onto a busy street.
"Well-"
"Long Island, and step on it."Grover cut me off.
"I looked over at Grover and felt him tense up. He looked like he was trying to smell something specific in the air.
"Hey, what's your problem?" I asked him.
"You. You smell like a de- I mean, you smell like; um; lavander?" He said. I could tell he was hiding something.
"Yeah. Lavander. Sure." I said.
Grover smiled at me nervously and pulled out his cell phone and started texting someone.
I settled back in my seat and heard Percy's cell phone ding like he got a text.
"Grover, are you texting me?" said Percy. Okay, now Grover definetely was hiding something.
"Yeah."
"We're sitting right next to each other!"
"Yeah, but it's important!"
"So important you can't just say it out loud?"
"Well, in case you haven't noticed, Wednesday's here too!"
"Oh, so you can't tell her, too?"
"Would you just read the dang text?" said Grover, clearly irritated.
"Fine."
I was tired oflistening to Grover and Percy argue, so I just closed my eyes and tried to tune them out.
"Oh. Then Iguess we really do haveto take her- um,there."
"Told ya."
I was still ignoring them when I heard Percy say something like "you missed your turn" to the driver. That's when things started to get a little wierd.
"Oh, the sweet nieveness (me: Idk if that's even a word. Oh well.) of young demigods. If they spend all their time slaying monsters, you would think they would be able to recognize one when they see it."
"Wait a minute;" Said Percy.
"Uhh, Percy; I don't think we have a minute to wait. We gotta get out of here!" Yelled Grover.
"No sh*t sherlock!" I said.
We all thrust the doors open and literally jumped out of the moving cab. And not a moment too soon, either. A second later, the taxi exploded and a huge monster with six heads, all breathing fire, came out of it.
"What happened to the driver?!?!" I yelled to Percy.
"That IS the driver!"
"RUN!" I heard Grover say.
I didn't need to be told twice. Finally, two years of forced track practice paid off.
I ran after Grover and Percy, never looking back behind me because I was afraid of what I would see. I fell and twisted my ankle.
"Oh crap, this thing is gonna eat me!" I said.
I was on the ground, then suddenly I was being carried by someone with strong arms that made me feel safe and secure. I looked up and saw Percy's familiar face.I thought about thanking him, butI decided to do it later, since he was very occupied with the important buisness of running for his life, and mine too.
When we reached a hill overlooking a big archway at the bottom, Percy stopped and set medown.
"Weneed to end up down there, but the monster will catch usbefore we can get down."
"HUGS!!!!" I yelled and wrapped my arms around Percy's waist. I then pulled down with all the strength I could manage, considering I had a sprained ankle. Just as I had planned, Percy lost his balance and we both rolled down the hill in a ball. Once we had rolled safely underneath the arch, we untangled our limbs and Percy asked if I was alright. I told him yes. He then grabbed me and hugged me tightly. We sat like that for a while, until he leaned back and held my face in his hands and looked into my eyes.
"So Grover was right." he said softly. "You are a demigod."
"Uh, okay. I am way too tired to even care what thatmeans." I said.
Percy looked at me and smiled. Then we just sat like that together, alone. I leaned my head on his chest and he wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head.
"It's okay. You're safe now." He said.
"I know."
