Wednesday I didn't get to go back to the hospital, because I'd already taken some days off from my job at the Surf Club and grumpy old Mr. Tonkin's, the head of the committee wouldn't cover my shift again.
You'd think a reason like being the girlfriend of the guy who was attacked by a shark in the surf competition would be a legitimate excuse.
Not according to old mate grumpy ass.
He just believed that young people these days were too damn lazy to work.
So Thursday morning I was up and getting ready before Keegan said he'd be leaving.
Of course yesterday I'd messaged Zander to explain why I couldn't come in and I'd asked Keegan to explain it to him, knowing he was heading back in, in case he still didn't have his phone.
He was going in every day until school started back next week.Keegan all but glared at the strawberry blonde, freckle faced woman behind the desk.
"What do you mean he's not here?"
"My computer say's he's no longer in this Ward."
She explained.
"Then where the hell is he?"
My brother asked, clenching his fists atop the reception desk.
"I'm... not sure..."
She murmured, her gaze turning back to her computer screen.
How the hell can she not know?
A familiar figure in Doctor whites caught my eye.
"Hold on Keegan!"
I hissed and ran for the Doctor.
"Excuse me! Doctor!"
The slightly greying man turned around slowly, looking confused.
"Hello there."
He greeted me with a slight smile.
"Hi. I'm... I'm really hoping you can tell me where Zander Hunter has been moved to?"
I asked, my heart practically pounding in my chest.
"Ah!"
His hazel eyes lit up a little as he smiled.
"He's gone down the hall to Ward C."
Phew.
"Thank you so much."
I told him, practically bouncing on my toes.
He nodded at me.
"No worries."
I turned to sprint back to Keegan.
"What did ya find out?"
My brother asked quickly.
"He's 'down the hall' in Ward C."
I explained quickly.
"Let's go."
Keegan grabbed my hand and dragged me toward the double door's.I got an uncomfortable vibe as we stepped into the green tones of Ward C.
It was making me feel nervous and anxious, but I tried hard to squash it.
I just hoped with all my heart that it didn't mean something was wrong with Zander.
"This way."
Keegan suggested, dragging me toward a large green reception desk.
A brunette with thickly rimmed glasses was sitting behind the desk with her eyes glued to the computer screen in front of her and a telephone clamped between her shoulder and her ear.
A man in Doctor whites and a woman in Nurse blue's were along the desk a little, hunched over a pile of paperwork and talking quietly.
Can we not even get any service around here?
I was seconds away from exploding from frustration.
The computer lady suddenly hung up the phone and glanced up at us, from where she was sat behind the desk.
"Can I help you?"
She queried.
I opened my mouth, but suddenly I was tongue tied.
Why couldn't I just say 'yes we're here to see Zander'?
"We're here to see Zander Hunter."
Keegan almost, but not quite demanded.
"Ummm... one moment."
Brunette told us, turning back to her computer.
I guess she might need to check which room he's in...
"I need your name's please."
She requested, turning to face us again.
"Why?"
Keegan asked, wearing a bewildered yet slightly irritated frown.
"It's part of the policy for Ward C Emergency."
The brunette explained.
Since when?
"We're Keegan and Bailey Evans."
My brother said with a frustrated roll of his eyes.
The sigh in his voice clearly showed his irritation.
Brunette turned back to her computer screen.
"Keegan, you're allowed to visit, but I'm sorry Bailey you are not."
I felt like somebody tipped a bucket of ice over my head.
What the hell?
"What the hell do you mean she can't see him?"
Keegan demanded, slamming his fists atop the reception desk.
Brunette flinched, but she rather quickly composed herself again.
"I'm sorry. Ward C is a highly structured Ward."
She explained.
"And who the hell is the idiot saying the guy's girlfriend can't see him?!"
Keegan exploded.
I managed to feel slightly touched by his enraged defence of me.
But mostly I was trying to understand what the heck had just happened?
I'm not allowed to see Zander?
Why the hell not?
"Sir, your visitation for today will be revoked if you can't calm down."
I blinked, noticing another woman; with deeply tanned skin and braided hair had also arrived on the scene behind the reception desk.
"We've driven for over an hour! We need to see Zander!"
Keegan seethed.
The newly arrived lady raised a hand to rub at her forehead, looking tired but frustrated.
"Our rule's are what they are. If one or both of you is restricted from visitation, I'm sorry but it is what it is."
She explained.
"She!"
Keegan almost yelled, throwing a hand to gesture to me.
"Is his girlfriend! Why the hell is she not allowed to visit him?!"
"I'm sorry but it's the rules. Now if you can calm yourself down Sir, you can be shown to Mister. Hunter's room."
Braided Nurse allowed.
"I'm not going without Bailey!"
Keegan growled.
"It's a violation of Patient Code Of Conduct for us to allow Miss. Evans entry as of this time."
Braided Nurse calmly explained.
Violation of-?
Suddenly it all clicked into place.
"So it's Zander who won't see me?"
I croaked through a thick onslaught of tear's.
"What a load of shit!"
Keegan growled, slamming his hand's on the desk top.
"He loves her! He wouldn't say no!"
"His Psychologist has given us a list of who can or cannot visit and I'm sorry but Bailey's name is on the 'cannot' list."
Braided Nurse explained, her brown eyes flickering to the computer screen.
Keegan turned around to face me.
I knew if he tried to comfort me, I'd fall apart for real.
I shook my head when he reached for me, his blue eyes filled with sorrow.
"Go."
I croaked, my eyes stinging with tear's.
"I'll bloody knock some sense into him."
Keegan seethed, clenching his fist's and his jaw.
"If your aim is to upset our Patient, we cannot let you in."
Braided Nurse warned.
"He won't."
I whispered.
I couldn't be positive Keegan wouldn't ask Zander what the hell was going on.
But Zander is bed bound, so I knew without a doubt that Keegan wouldn't lay a hand on him.
Braided lady led Keegan around the large green desk and I waited, watching my brother's back until he was out of my sight.
