*POV Jack*
I felt guilty. Very guilty. Because of me, Britt got distracted and Pitch got the chance to break her bow. Even Manny’s interference couldn’t cheer me up. I didn’t deserve to be cheered up. Britt needed to be. I didn’t join the confused conversation about what was going on. I just stared at the moon, wondering if I could still be a guardian, now that one of the believers was hurt because of me.
But clearly, Manny didn’t show up because of my wrong doings. For some odd reason, the area was suddenly covered in some sort of fog. With Manny’s light shining down on it, it was impossible to see anything. A scream broke through the tensed silence. For a moment, all I could hear was the terrible echo. Then a silvery voice became audible. It was so soft, it seemed almost liquid through the strange fog.
‘You have fought for ages to protect the children, and defeat our worst enemy: fear. Tonight shall be the last moment of bloodshed, for I am now able to take back fear and bring peace and joy back on earth. I regret was has happened many years ago, and I am sorry I haven’t been able to tell you. Now, a new era will arise, an era without fear, and without having to fight for our freedom. Guardians, your job is hereby declared fulfilled. You will be no longer necessary to protect the children. All there’s left to you now, is to continue spreading love and joy. I am proud of you.’
After that, the fog lifted and the moonlight returned to its normal brightness. Shocked, I realised it must have been Manny who spoke to us.
*POV North*
I just stood there open mouthed. I didn’t know what to say. That voice… The last time I heard it, had been hundreds and hundreds of years ago!
‘Mate, did we just get sacked?’ Bunny exclaimed astonished. I couldn’t bring up an answer.
*POV Tooth*
‘This is unbelievable!’ I remarked, flying to and from the others. ‘We can’t just stop being guardians! The children need us!’ Sandy shook his head.
‘What do you mean, Sandy?’ North asked. But he had already been clear to me.
‘The children don’t need us, we need them…’ I whispered. I got down on the ground.
‘What are we going to do?’ Jack asked, for the first time that day sounding worried.
‘I don’t know, mate,’ Bunny said in a defeated voice. ‘I don’t know.’
