She looked and felt distant. Her voice was danced with exhaustion, her silver eyes dull and a stony gray. I watched her throughout the day, seeing she was only getting worse if someone was to attempt to comfort her.
We walk to the park, side by side, silently listening to the wind. Children in their winter coats play in the snow that blankets the playground with their friends whilst their parents chat and carefully watching over them. She pauses and watches them, a sad smile. "We used to play like that...," her soft, quiet voice waltz around my ears blissfully, creating peace in my mind. I grab her hand and pull her towards an empty area of the playground. She looks at me oddly for a moment before it clicks in her mind.
"Let's play, the snow is fresh and we have all the time in the world," I smile to her and give her hand a light squeeze. She nods with a smile the slowly grows. Until the sun started to set, we played in the snow. We laughed and smiled. As we walk to home, I feel a small child hold onto my hand and say,"I love you and Mommy." A smile finds it way to my face and I give a little squeeze to both hands.
As we arrived home, I felt the hand slip away and in a sad voice say that they had to go back until it was time. Knowing in my heart, I open the door to our home and welcomed the warmth and love the house sheltered.
