The Experiment and the Mission
━━━━━━━━━
I sighed and picked up my textbook as I raced out of math. I couldn't stand this class, or my next class for that matter. School just wasn't my thing. I had no idea how Chase loved it so much. He had to help me with assignments on a daily basis. It was quite puzzling how I was able to graduate high school with such good grades. Well, I did had a genius father, best friend, and best friend's dad there to help me.
"Hey Bree!" Someone called from behind me. I twirled around to see Ethan Wescott running up to me. I smiled brightly as he stopped in front of me. I had had a crush on him since the beginning of this year.
"Hey, Ethan. What's up?" I asked nervously. We had never really talked before. He smiled and took in a deep breath.
"Can I walk with you to class?" He asked warily. I nodded enthusiastically before he took my hand and lead me off to our science class. He swung our hands back and forth as we slowly made our way to the dreaded chemistry. We walked in silence for a good three minutes, not knowing what to say to each other. It was weird actually being alone with him know. It has always been easy to talk with Chase. Why was it so hard to talk with Ethan?
"So, what have you been up to?" Ethan asked after a long silence. I shrugged.
"Nothing much, just school. You?" I replied. His face lit up as I mentioned him.
"Same here. I'm studying to be a math teacher, though." Ethan added. I smiled.
"Really? I haven't decided yet. Why math?" I asked. I had no idea he had such an interest in math anyway. He didn't seem like the scholar type now that I think about it.
"I really like long division. Decimal points just make sense to me." He replied. We stepped through the large doors and walked back to our seats in the back row. I frowned as I saw Chase wasn't here yet. He and Adam were always extra early. The first bell rang just as Adam and Chase ran inside. I laughed as they hung their heads low and walked back to take their seats on my left side. The four of us were in a group for this class. Chase smiled shyly as he took his seat next to me.
"What happened with you guys?" I whispered to Chase as the late bell rang and the teacher walked in.
"Leo sent us on another mission." Chase whispered with a smirk. I laughed and looked to see Adam smiling.
"What are those again?" I wondered. Leo had never really included anyone but the guys, not that I was complaining. These two didn't seem to be having the time of their lives with them.
"They're pranks that Leo pulls on us. I don't know why we had to see that." Adam answered as Chase concentrated on the equation being written on the board. Ethan slummed back in his chair and slipped out his phone while I pulled out my textbook and turned to the correct page. Adam sighed and rested his chin on the lab table. Chase shook his head and reached ahead of him to grab the specific ingredients for the experiment.
"Adam, can you get me some test tubes from the back?" Chase asked as he slipped on his goggles. Adam nodded and glumly walked back to the table. He smiled brightly at the test tubes as he made his way back to us.
"Test tube, test tube, one - two - three*." Adam said happily as he re-enacted anyone who has ever tested a microphone. I smiled at his stupidity as Chase shook his head and took the test tubes out of his hand. I turned to see Ethan was still siting on his phone while we were doing all the work. Chase tapped me on the shoulder just as I was about to say something to him.
"You forgot your goggles." Chase whispered against my neck as he reached back for a pair of goggles and slipped them onto my nose. I smiled nervously as Chase let his fingers rest on my check. I took a deep breath and turned back to face Ethan. He was not getting away with this, just sitting there playing on his phone while the three if us did all the work He was looking incredulously between Chase and I with his phone trying on the table. What was up with his kid?
"Ethan, are you going to help us?" I hissed. He rolled his eyes and turned back to his phone.
"Nah, it looks like you, your boyfriend, and your other friend have got it covered." He mumbled back. I frowned in confusion.
"I don't have a boyfriend." I answered. Ethan's head shot up immediately.
"You don't?" He asked in disbelief. I shook my head.
"Bree and I are just friend, Ethan." Chase mumbled as he poured a salt like substance into the blue liquid that was bubbling on the burner. I sighed and turned to help Chase just as Ethan caught my arm.
"Well since you're not seeing anyone, would you like to?" Ethan asked vaguely. I glared back at him.
"Are you going to help us?" I asked sternly. He nodded vigorously as he pushed past me to help Chase.
"What do you need Chase?" Ethan asked as he stepped right next to my best friend. Chase closed his eyes, obviously trying to stay calm. Ethan wasn't exactly the brightest lightbulb in the box.
"I need you to-"
"What?" Ethan asked eagerly. Chase smiled as he stood up straight to face him.
"To take a step back. I've got this." Chase said surely before he went back to the experiment. Ethan rolled his eyes and shoved Chase out of the way, causing Chase to drop the test tube in his hand. It hit the floor and shattered across the tile. My eyes widened as Chase store back, staring at his hard work shattered on the ground. He slowly moved his head up to glare at Ethan.
"I told you to step back." Chase hissed. Ethan shrugged.
"You were doing it wrong anyway." Ethan answered simply. Chase sighed and walked back to grab a paper towel as Ethan turned back to look at me.
"Will you still go out with me?" Ethan asked hopefully. I sighed and looked around him to Chase who was cleaning up this idiot's mess as we spoke. Chase and I were probably never going to happen. I had to let him go. There was no possible way that the two of us were ever going to be more than just best friends.
"Yes, I will go out with you." I answered. Ethan smiled and walked around me to take his seat. He pulled out his phone and went back to his friends. I rolled my eyes and turned to see Chase looking defeated.
"What?" I whispered as I walked over to him.
"Nothing, it's just-" But he was interrupted by the bell. I sighed and helped Chase clean up the rest as Ethan raced of the door. Of course he had to run from this. Adam smiled and handed Chase his backpack. The three of us made our way out to lunch.
"So what did Leo have you guys do?" I wondered aloud. Chase shivered at the thought while Adam's face went flat.
"What?" I asked. They looked to each other before they looked back to me.
"You know that stupid play Leo wanted to be in last semester?" Chase started. I nodded along.
"Let's just say, he finally got the part."
