Hating the Truth

━━━━━━━━━

This was it. I had a date with Ethan tonight. Why was I dreading this? I like him... But not as much as I liked Chase. I shook my head. No. Chase didn't like me like that.

Yes, we had kissed a couple of times before, and even come close to that fact a few more times. But this was different. Ethan actually acknowledged that he liked me. If Chase did indeed like me, which he didn't, be would have told me by now. I sighed as I turned to see the very person in mention stop in my doorway and lean against the door.

"Hey." Chase greeted as I pulled of my lip gloss.

"Hey." I replied.

"Do you need anything?" Chase asked asked awkwardly. We had never been in this situation before. This was only my second or third date with any guy.

"No. I'm good." I answered. We each stood in silence for a bit as he watched me continue to get ready.

"Are you so sure you want to go on this date?" Chase asked as I put on my earrings. I nodded and played with the hem of my dress. I was a little nervous for this.

"I do. I like Ethan and he finally asked me out. It's going to be great." I answered simply. As I turned to face him, his mouth dropped. I smiled.

"You look great." Chase mumbled before he ran off down the hallway. I stood back. What was that? We had been talking with me for the last couple of minutes while I did my makeup, and now he realizes what I'm wearing? This kid. I shook my head and reached for my black wedges that matched my flower patterned dress. I slipped on my shoes and placed my phone in my purse just as I heard the doorbell ring. I closed my eyes as I waited for Ethan's voice to ring through the apartment.

"Hey Chasey!" Leo announced as he and Adam stumbled into the apartment. I sighed and walked out to see them talking in the living room.

"Why do you all have to be here?" I groaned. I did not want the three of them here to see me off with my date. They would ruin it, and I was finally getting over Chase.

"Oh come on, Bree. We're not that bad." Adam replied. Leo nodded with a look of offense on his face.

"You don't like us?" Leo asked in mock surprise. I shook my head.

"You guys know I love you, but..."

"But what?" They asked in synch. I rolled my eyes.

"You three will embarrass me." I answered. Adam held his hand up to his chest as if I had shot him with a nerf gun.

"Well that hurts." Adam said. Chase nodded.

"You just like to insult us, don't you?" Leo said as he placed his hands on his hips.

"Guys-" I groaned before the doorbell rang again. My eyes widened as Leo lunged for the door. I raced as fast as I could to beat him but I could not run in heels.

"Ethan!" Leo announced as he opened the door. Ethan frowned as he saw me run up behind him.

"Hey, Bree." Ethan greeted warily. I smiled and walked out into the hallway with Adam, Leo, and Chase following me. I took Ethan's hand and lead him down the hallway to the stairs, trying to avoid what I knew would happen. Adam was like an older brother to me to say the least.

"Ethan, I have a few questions for you." Adam said as he stopped us. Chase and Leo still stood at the end of the hall with their arms crossed over their chests.

"What?" Ethan asked. Adam smiled slyly.

"What are your intentions with my very special friend?" Adam asked, his eyes growing wide along with his interrogation.

"To date her?" Ethan answered, sounding unsure of what Adam wanted.

"Oh really, because I have reason to believe-"

"Bye Adam." I interrupted, pushing Ethan in front of me and away from my insane group of friends. Adam frowned as I turned back to look at him. I shook my head and continued out to the lot where Ethan had his car parked.

"What was that?" Ethan asked as he opened the door for me. I laughed lightly, trying to act as if it was nothing.

"My friends being stupider than normal." I replied. He laughed and walked around to the other side of the car before he got in himself.

"That's cool." Ethan said nonchalantly.

"No, it's not. I really like you and I don't want them to mess this up for me." I ranted. Ethan smiled and took my hand.

"Hey, they aren't going to do anything. They were just trying to freak you out about this." Ethan said reassuringly. I nodded until Chase popped into my head.

"But Chase was trying to stop me for even going with you. Which is probably why he called Adam and Leo in the first place." I continued. Ethan frowned.

"Have you ever noticed how much he likes you? Of course he wouldn't want you going out with another guy." Ethan answered before he turned and started the car.

"Chase doesn't like me." I replied, trying to brush it off. I was still completely (I think) in love with Chase. I had need felt that way with anyone, but him. In a way, it almost felt as if I was pushing this relationship with Ethan to work because, deep down, I knew Chase and I would never be together. It broke my heart that it never would. I had to tell myself every morning when I woke up that I couldn't tell Chase how I felt. I could feel my eyes slowly growing fuzzy at the thought of how much I loved him. I hated it. But this, right here with Ethan, felt like my way out. It felt right in a way, but wrong in another, since I was still falling for Chase. I shook my head. This was right. I needed this. After all these years of loving Chase, and getting nothing out of it, this was the time.

"Oh trust me, he's head over heels for you. I don't think I've ever seen any guy look the way he does when he looks at you. It's strange." Ethan shuttered at the though. I sat back and let his words bounce around. How could he even think that? This was not how it was. Chase didn't like me, I liked him. And if what Ethan said was true, why wasn't Ethan looking that way at me?

"Please, Ethan. Chase doesn't like me. And besides, I like you. That's all that matters." I said simply. He smiled at my mention of him.

"You really do? You don't like your best friend more than me?" Ethan teased. I rolled my eyes and laid my hand on top of his.

"I do. I like you more than anyone I've liked before." I answered. He smiled and pulled into the restaurant. I sighed and showed myself into the reastaurant as he held the door open for me. For the moment, trying to forget how many times Chase and I had been here. And how we had ten times more fun than I was about to have with Ethan.
