"The one your mother who has an affair with is my father." He said. Fine felt her chest constrict tighter and feels like something is blocking her throat. "But that is not all. Your father filing for divorce was done by my mother. She pressured your father into doing it." He continued. Fine was taken aback. She got confused of what he said. She thought she already knows everything. "My father threatened my mother that he would divorce her if she tries to interfere with his affair. You see, there is no love in that family. They were married out of politics. My mother is well known in the business industry and her roots in the political world while my father in the scientific community. She pressured your father to file for divorce and keep quiet about it so if the affair is exposed, there would be lesser casualties. First, your father got fired, and next, no company accepted him. Your sister was also affected. My mother orchestrated a failure at her law firm in which she was forced to carry the blame. It's politics Fine. Dirty politics and I'm disgusted by it so I also ran away and strived to establish myself. I'm so sorry Fine. I'm so sorry." Fine fell on her knees as her tears fall down uncontrollably. Gale embraced her but she pushed him away. She stood up and tried to speak but her tears would not let her. Gale was also crying, he knew it would hurt her but he decided that she needed to know. "I-I'm sorry Fine. I'm so sorry." He repeated again and again. "N-No. Stop it. I-I" Fine held onto the counter and tried to contain herself.
She stares at him as she whimpers. She was stunned at what she learned but she was more disappointed in herself which breaks her even more. It is the guilt of wronging another innocent man whose also in pain. "I-I knew about your father." She said. Her tears interfering her speech. "I even knew about you and my sister. About you watching over me, preventing me to know about your father. I knew it all. I am only here to destroy your father Gale. I am only here to use you to destroy the man who destroyed my family because I knew it all." She continues to whimper. "I thought I knew it all. I was ignorant. All inside me was hatred. I was the only victim and I didn't even consider my father, my sister, and not even you. I'm so ignorant. Ignorant and useless. I didn't know how much my father and my sister suffered and protected me. So ignorant I want to die." She said. Gale walked over to her and embraced her but she pushed him away again. "I'm sorry Gale. I was ignorant." She said then she ran off with her jacket and her phone. Gale tried to stop her but she was quick escape and ride a cab. The cab driver was staring at her as he drives off, cautiously asking the crying woman where to go. She gave him the direction and called Adam. It was a long drive and the cab driver is already doubting if the woman could afford to pay him. "You've already hit quite a price ma'am. Do you have money for fare?" The driver asked but Fine was not answering as she is lost in thought. Convinced that the woman who does not even has her shoes on cannot pay him, he stopped the car on the highway. "Ma'am, this is not a free ride, if you cannot pay then you might as well get off the car." He said but Fine was still lost in thoughts. "Ma'am" Fine looked at driver and noticed that the car has stopped. "W-Why did you stop the car?" "Ma'am, if you cannot pay then just get off the car." He said. "I-I have money. I mean I don't have now but my friend has-" "Ma'am, get off" Fine could not argue anymore. She finds it pointless to argue so she got off. She could not do anything but to walk to her destination.
The sun is already rising, she was tired, hungry, and thirsty when the scent of the sea brushed her olfactory but her destination is still far. She was already dizzy until she completely lost her footing. A black car passed through her and stopped. Adam came out of the car frantic and worried as he saw his best friend sitting on the asphalt and leaning on the barriers of the road. He quickly pulled her up and cleared her face of her hair. "Fine! Fine! What happened?!" Fine recognized him then she embraced him and started whimpering again but she lost consciousness shortly. Adam carried her to his car and drove his car to the hospital in speed exceeding the limit. He was waiting outside the emergency room. He does not know what to do. His heart aches remembering how his best friend looked like at the highway. He was angry at his self on not picking her up earlier. The doctor came out of the room. He ran over quickly and asked of her condition. "Rest assured. She's just tired and dehydrated that's why she passed out. We'll move her to a room for recovery. Don't worry, she can be discharged tomorrow. She's on IV for rehydration so she could sleep and rest without interference." The doctor said.
Adam stared at his friend, waiting for her to wake up. He wanted to know what happened. He contemplates whether to call her sister or not. He arrived to a decision to call her but before he could, Fine woke up. He quickly called a doctor who examined her then the doctor assured them of her health. Adam embraced her and caressed her hair. "What happened? What happened Fine? I almost died seeing you like that." He uttered. "D-Did you call my sister?" She asked. "No, not yet." "Don't call her. It would only worry her." She said. "Can I borrow your phone? My phone died when talked so I can't call you." She said then he nodded and gave him his phone. She dialled a number and told her of her whereabouts. "Did you call your sister? I thought-" "I called Gale." She said which surprised him with an ache in his chest but he let it go. Hours have passed as she tells what she learned. "What do you plan to do now?" He asked but before she could answer, the door opened. It was Gale, catching his breath and looking at her worriedly. He rushed to her side, not noticing the other man who greeted him with a blow of his fist. Fine was surprised but she could not do anything in her weak state. With every strike, Adam tells him how he found her on the cold highway.
She knew Gale would neither strike back nor defend his self. "C-Can you leave us for a while Adam?" She asked the man whose fists are still burning. He dropped Gale and glared at him then he went outside. Gale rushed to her side, crying, and then he held her hand. She pulled her hand off his grip, the feeling of disappointment and emptiness eats her inside. Though weak, she pushed herself to sit up. She stared at Gale, on his bleeding lips. She wiped it off with her fingers. "He really hit you hard. You don't deserve it." She said. "I do. I deserve it. I shouldn't have let you go. I should have followed that cab." He said, blaming his self for what happened. "I didn't think that you'd really come here." She said then Gale shook his head. "I'm responsible for this." He said which further upset her. "I feel numb. I'm disappointed in myself. I give up. What can a nobody like me do against your powerful family?" She said, sadness and disappointment are evident in her voice. "Then- I-Is this it? Are we ending it here?" Gale asked, his chest thumping heavily. He wanted to say something more, something he believes he must tell her but the circumstances won't let him. "I guess so. Can I keep the job?" She asked which sparked fire in his heart. "Of course!" He exclaimed.
Adam entered the room, interrupting their conversation. He bought food for Fine and served it to Fine as if Gale was not present. "You need to eat. That's what the doctor said." He said then he handed her spoon and fork. Gale could only stare at him. He felt like he does not have a place there and that he and his family caused her to become like this. "By the way, I'll drop by your house to get my belongings after the class." Fine said which dismayed Adam. "What class?" He asked curiously. "I'll be tutoring children at the cram school this break. I need to earn money so I could get my own flat." She said which disappointed Adam. "Won't you stay with your sister? If you don't want then you can stay at my house. You need to rest first Fine." He said but Fine only stared at him and within that stare, Adam knew he should not insist anymore. "What are you still doing here? Aren't you done talking with her?" He turned to Gale who was lost for words at the attitude. He looked at Fine who was glaring at Adam. "Who are you to talk at him like that? Just what right do you have?" She said, almost in brink of shedding tears. She tried to remain calm but everything is appalling and is too much. She had to find a way to find a way to release the sadness.
She pulled out the IV and ran out of the room. Both men were astounded and frozen on their places. Adam tried to follow her but stopped before the door. He looked at Gale and shook his head. "I'm sorry man. Can you follow her? Please man, please." He pleaded, scornful at his self. Gale felt his sincerity. Although he also feels the same, that he too does not have the right, his feet rushed his self to follow Fine.
