Author's Note
Second Book is called Broken Silence. If you still have this book in your library, you're in luck, because you get to read the first chapter of Broken Silence right now.
Chapter One:
"Kyle! You got a letter from Melody!" Alice shouted. I ran into the kitchen, were Alice was going through the mail.
"She left only a few days ago, a letter already?" Alice asked.
"Three days ago." I corrected. I took the letter. It was in a plain white envelope with a stamp with the American flag in the corner. I ripped open the envelope. I took out the letter and recognized Melody's rushed handwriting.
Dear Kyle,
Remember that letter you sent me when you were in the hospital? Telling me to get all black clothes, so I could bust you out of the place? Time for you to do it now. This place stinks. We stay in six cabins in the woods. Three for boys and three for girls. The cabins each have 10 bunks in them. I have seven girls in my cabin (Seven is Apollo's sacred number, just if you don't remember), I'm included in that count. The activities aren't bad, I just stink. These kids have been going to this camp since they were like seven, what am I doing here? I need to get home.Help,
Melody Elizabeth Reed"What does it say?" Alice asked. I read it allowed to Alice.
"You're not sneaking out." Alice said sternly.
"Don't worry, I'm not that crazy." I reminded Alice.
"Sometimes I doubt that." Alice muttered.
"Hey!"
"Kidding, kidding, kinda."
"If I had a pillow right now I would throw it at you." I said.
"Love you too bro." Alice said. I rolled my eyes.
"Melody's middle name is Elizabeth?" Alice asked.
"Yeah, she's told me like once, few months ago." I said. Alice didn't say anything for a few seconds.
"Well sent her a letter back." Alice said. "I'll mail it to you tomorrow. I have to get to work." Alice grabbed her purse and started heading out the door.
"Kyle, are you going to be ok alone the whole day? I could look and see if you can volunteer anywhere during the day." I jumped up and ran after Alice.
"The pet shelter. Please?????" I begged. "It's right by the candy store." I added. Alice started working at a candy shop during the summer, since she still had another year to go in collage before she could start looking for a job as a teacher.
"I'll look into it, but I'm not making any promises." Alice said. I hugged her quickly before she left. I locked the door and put the alarm on. I went ahead and made myself some toast (with butter). I read Melody's letter again. I pulled out a blue paper and a black pen.

Dear Melody,
Camp can't be that bad. I'm sure you'll make tons of friends. But I'm telling you, if anyone bullies you again, I'm busting you out of there (Alice forbidden me from dressing up in black clothes and getting you out of there, so we'll have to skip the part about the black clothes). It's been boring here. Not much to do. On the bright side, Alice said I might be able to volunteer at the animal shelter near the candy shop, Pet Paws Animal Shelter. I want to do it
See you soon!

I signed my full name, as Melody did. I didn't think I had told her my middle name, so now she knew. I folded up the letter and slid it into an envelope. I stuck a stamp in the corner and wrote the address carefully and neatly. I left the letter on the counter, where Alice would find it later. I ran down the hallway and flopped on my bed in my room.
I flopped on something hard. I sat up and found what I had landed on. Melody's book. I rolled my eyes. Usually I was the one leaving things all over her house and she would have to bring it to me the next day, but lately Melody had been forgetting her Percy Jackson books here.
I smiled as I ran my fingers down the letters I had written in each book during Christmas last year. It seemed like it had been ages ago.
It had only been three days and I already missed the adventures Melody brought along.
