"I'm sorry." I said. My voice sounded ruff and scratchy from not talking for four years. It felt weird, but at the same time, almost a relief.
"Kyle!" Melody said full of surprise. "You talked!"
"Yeah." I said in the same scratchy voice. She hugged me with her one arm that wasn't in a cast.
Alice walked in the room. She was holding a flower bouquet. I ran up to get and hugged her really, really tightly.
"Thank you." I told her. My voice still scratchy and ruff. She dropped the flowers to the ground. She hugged my head and I saw she was crying.
"Only took four years." I said. Alice was still crying.
"It's ok Kyle. It's ok." She hugged me tighter.

Melody's family came in about 15 minutes later. Her parents, Mina (who in the end had gotten a different plane ride to Canada), Zach, Kelley, Albert, Rose, Jake, Jack, Jazzy, and Lilac all came in. It was a large crowd, with a small room. Alice and I stepped outside, so they could have there own family time.
"Kyle, I'm so happy." Alice said. She hugged me again.
"I know. Me too." I said. I hadn't talked too much, since I started talking again. It almost hurt to talk, and I didn't like the sound of my voice. It was so scratchy and ruff. I guess Alice had tried to keep my talking, so I wouldn't stop talking again. I wasn't planning on going silent again. I knew dad wouldn't have wanted that.
"Kyle, if I can ask. Why did you stop talking?" Alice asked. I knew she was going to ask the question sooner or later. Better get it over with.
"When Dad died." I started. "I felt all lost. I didn't know how to react or anything. I didn't know what to say, so I shut up. I didn't say anything at all." My voice wasn't as scratchy anymore, but it was still ruff. It was really dry too. I stood up and got a cup of water. This was going to take some getting used to.
"I just didn't say anything, but when Mom got re-married a few months later and forced us to move from Montana to live in Illinois, I didn't have any say in it, so why not just not have a say in anything?" I explained softly.
"I'm sorry Kyle. I haven't been the best adult figure to you these months we've been here." Alice said.
"But that's the thing!" I said, not being quiet anymore. "You were a better example. You let me have enough freedom, the I didn't feel trapped, but you put limits on me too. You always made me feel like I was wanted. In Michigan, in Illinois, and in Montana!" I said. "That's why I look up to you so much."
