The 1975 - Fallingforyou

I spent all Saturday getting ready for the ball. My mom got my hair dye and helped me put in my hair in the bathroom, brown hair dye falling everywhere. I laughed when a bold streak was on my forehead. I got in the shower to rinse it out after waiting twenty minutes. The shower looked like it was full of mud.

Drying my hair and scrunching my curls, I looked in the mirror seeing the old me. It felt so familiar. I smiled, knowing that I'm not who I use to be. I'm just a better, damaged version and I'm beginning to be okay with that.

I began to apply my makeup, putting on a shimmery gold eye shadow with a precise cat eye. I used blush on my cheeks, thicken my eyebrows, and used a light colored lipstick. I pinned my hair back, letting the rest fall down my back with curls loose in different places.

After applying my makeup and being satisfied with the results, I get my dress that lies on my bed that my mom also bought for me to wear. I slip it on, the black, slim dress fitting my body nicely. It has diamonds going up to the neck, the top half of my back exposed.

I breathe out, staring at myself in the mirror, for once not hating myself. I add a diamond bracelet on my left wrist, placing rings on some of my fingers. The last thing I add is clip on earrings that sparkle and dangle. I never got my ears pieced so this is what I have to resort to.

"Skylar! You ready yet?" I hear my mom yell.

"Yeah!" I call back. I take one last glance in the mirror and exit my room. I walk down the stairs, my black heels clinking against our wooden staircase. I see my mom standing in the foyer fixing her ear rings in the mirror by the door. She's in a long, brown dress that's beautiful.

"I think we'll make it on time. We might have to speed a-" she says, looking over at me. I stand on the last step, clutching on to the sides of my dress.

"Do I look okay?" I ask, slightly insecure of how much of my body the dress shows.

"You look beautiful," she compliments, her smile so bright and pure. She pulls me into a hug once I step down onto the floor. I smell her musky perfume that she has worn since I was a little girl. I remember running up to her and hugging her after I got out of day care and smelling the perfume buried in her clothes.

I'm glad I remembered to wear my own perfume, that has a fresh floral scent to it. "Thanks mom," I say.

Dad comes in the foyer in a tux, straightening out his tie.

"Look at my two favorite women in the world. You both look fab," he says proudly.

"Thanks, Ben," Mom says, kissing him on the cheek.

"Fab?" I question.

"Isn't that what the cool kids say now and days?" he says.

"No. They don't dad."

"Oh," he says. "Okay. Let's go." We head out to the car and pull out the drive way. I automatically look over at Austin's house, seeing his bedroom light on through his curtains. His car is in the driveway and I'm surprised because he should be at support group. Maybe they let out early and that's why he's home.
