I arrive at the hospital suddenly nervous to see him, I feel as though I've done something bad. I pay for a box of chocolates from the hospital shop to give to him and then head up to his ward.

His eyes light up and he smiles his crooked smirk at me as I approach him. I'm virtually running buy the time I reach him, and I carefully hug him before placing the chocolates on his bedside-table.

"Hey," I say softly, kneeling down beside him.

"Hey," he replies. "Honestly I've been staring at that stupid bright painting all day, I was bored out of my skull!" I glance across the bed at the abstract framed painting handing on the wall and laugh.

"I'm so glad you're here, I swear if I had to reread that measles pamphlet one more time..." he trails off and we both laugh.

"They say I'll be out sometime next week," he smiles. "Then we can get back up on the roof and watch another sunset, maybe even have a picnic or something?"

I nod vigorously. "Sounds like a plan," We both look up at the sound of shoes squeaking on the polished floor.

A nurse peeks around the edge of the curtain and smiles. "Thomas, sweetie, time for your x-ray," she says in a gentle Irish accent.

Thomas's cheeks get slightly red at the pet name the nurse calls him. "Well that didn't last long," I said, sad that our time was already over.

Thomas smiles apologetically. "Sorry.. hey come here," I go back to his side and crouch down as he reaches up. "I'm not allowed to wear this during the x-ray so would you-"

He takes the thin gold chain from around his neck and reaches up to clip it around mine. Our eyes connect and I notice the flecks of gold that lie around the edge of his pupils. His eyes are so beautiful.

"Are you sure?" I ask as I touch the slim necklace. "Of course I am. It gives me an excuse to see you tomorrow so that you can give it back," he grins. "Besides," he adds, "it looks really good on you,"

I arrive home with a fluttery feeling and a grin that doesn't want to go away. I get inside the door and hang my keys on the peg by the door.

"Milly, is that you?" Mum calls out. I go into the kitchen and she's sitting at the kitchen table reading while dad makes dinner.

She looks up when I come in and smiles, though I notice her eyes are red-rimmed. I decide not to ask her about it.

"That's a nice necklace," she comments, squinting through her reading glasses. "It's Thomas's, I'm returning it tomorrow." I explain, and dad turns around to get a look at it.

"I've noticed him wearing that, it suits him, and you," he smiles and turns back to the cooking.

Later on I go up to my room, and hear them talking when I'm lying on my bed. My mother's impatient voice carries up the stairs and creeps around my door so I can hear every word.

"She's been spending an awful lot of time with him, always at the hospital nowadays, I feel like we don't see her anymore. And you, you're always over with Daniel, watching 'the game'. You don't even like sport! We're all drifting apart,"

I can picture my dad looking awkward, wondering what to say to make her feel better. Next is his quiet voice gently replying. "Honey, you know Dan invites you over as well, and I know you would rather spend time as a family, but Milly gets on very well with Thomas, he's a good lad," dad trails off, he's never been one for big speeches.

I turn over and kick off my shoes, playing with the necklace.

After dinner I decide to head to sleep because I'm so tired. In fact, I can't even be bothered to put on pajamas, just fall onto my covers in my underwear and bra.
