Chapter 17

---------------LEAH'S POV----------------


"Ma'am, are you sure your attacker isn't there?"


I tore my gaze from the line up of men behind glass before me and met the detectives bored gaze, shaking my head.


"Positive, he's not there. I told you he has a really big scar on his face. It's not something you forget." I looked through the glass again as the men were led away.


The police were investigating my "attack" and had been rounding up suspects for a week. I was hopeful for the first two rounds but now I dread standing in that tiny room, waiting to see if my attacker ever shows up.


They had arrested Keith already and questioned him about the whole gang but he had been less than helpful. And with the help of a few powerful friends he was bailed out and walking free.


"This is fucked up, how many times are we gonna be dragged down here for nothing?" Another voice piped up. I turned around to face Jai who came with me for every single trip to the station. "For all we know you could just be grabbing random men off the street for this!!"


I walked over to him and placed a hand on his arm comfortingly. He looked down at me and the anger in his eyes faded slightly. I faced the detective again.


"Thank you, detective, for trying again. I think it's best of we just call this off for now, we don't seem to be getting anywhere." I smiled wanly and he heaved himself off his chair.


"Very well, I'll call you if we have any breakthroughs. Stay safe ma'am."


I felt Jai's muscles tense under my hands and I led him away down the corridor.


"Stay safe," Jai muttered angrily. "Stay fucking safe, can you believe him? Maybe people could stay fucking safe if he did his job properly and kept maniacs off the streets!"


We had reached the front entrance and I winced at the sudden change from the dim lighting in the station to blazing sunshine. I linked Jai's arm and started walking towards my car.


"I know," I admitted. "But there's nothing much we can do so let's not stress about it, ok?" I looked up at him pleadingly but his jaw set into a hard line.


I stopped walking and pulled his hand, jerking him back slightly. He stopped and turned to me as I wrapped my arms around his waist and stepped a little closer to him.


"Please Jai. I need you to be with me on this, more than ever. Promise you'll just stay calm about all this?" His stony expression softened and I felt his fingertips graze down the back of my arms.


"Sure babe, I promise." He murmured quietly. I smiled rewardingly and kissed him gently. I was slowly getting better at handling close contact with other people and getting intimate like this was a stepping stone for me.


I pulled away and took his hand again, enjoying the feel of his slightly rough palm against mine.


"You wanna grab a Starbucks?" Jai asked me as we strolled past a couple of shops. "I'll text the rest of the boys and maybe we can hit the beach."


I nodded immediately and Jai pulled his phone out from his shorts to text the rest of the group. I had definitely missed the whole group over the past while and I jumped at the opportunity to reunite with them.


We browsed through a couple of shops to pass the time. I managed to drag Jai into Top Shop for an hour whilst I bought all around me. Every so often I would turn around and he would be wearing a bikini over his clothes and cover himself in jewellery which sent me into hysterics.


"Jai, we're gonna get kicked out you loser!" I spluttered as he strutted past me in a very petite gold bikini and shades. He spun on his heel to face me and lowered the shades slightly on his nose.


"It's called fashion, look it up biatch." He stated, sending me into another fit of laughter. I paid for my stuff at the checkout as Jai was escorted out by security and dropped the bags in the car before meeting up with the boys.


Skip was the first one to greet me with massive hug that nearly broke my ribs.


"LEEEAAAAHHHH we missed you! Never leave us again, I had no one to cook for me!" I laughed and shoved him off. He was basically like Niall from 1D, always obsessing over food.


Beau grinned at me and pulled me in for a hug also. He gave me his sunglasses seeing that I forgot mine and put them on my head.


"Good to see you kiddo, wasn't the same without you." I smiled warmly and Jai pulled me closer to him.


"Oi that's my bird mate, paws off!" He shouted jokingly. Beau put his fists up and started wheeling around Jai.


"I'll fight ya for her mate!" He yelled, lunging for Jai's head, putting him in a headlock and ruffling up his hair. I smiled at Jai's muffled protests as James and I started walking towards the beach.


"We really did miss you," he said to me as we walked. "Jai was pretty much a mess and the atmosphere between us all was just the worst." I gave him a half smile and punched his arm playfully.


"Aww is Jamesy-wamesy getting all emotional?" I teased, then I stopped. "Wait a second.." I punched his arm again and he recoiled.


"Hey, what the fuck was that for?!" He cried, rubbing the place where I had hit him. I grabbed his bicep and gasped. There was definite muscle definition that wasn't there before when I last saw him!


"James what the fuck!!! I don't see you for 3 weeks and suddenly you're buffed up!" I exclaimed as he blushed slightly. "You're like the hulk, how much are you benching?"


He smiled proudly, lighting up his whole expression and showing his perfect white teeth. Damn, some girl was gonna be lucky to get him.


"I've been working really hard," he told me, still smiling. "I'm benching 40kg already, I mean I have to keep the standards up with you being a trainer and everything." I grinned at him and high-fived him.


"Dude, you are so built already it's crazy! I can't wait to get you into my gym, we'll be workout buddies!" I squealed and we both laughed.


We turned around after hearing a shout from behind us and saw that Skip had pulled down Lukes shorts in front of a crowd of teenage girls, sending them into hysterics. I giggled at Luke's bright red face and saw Jai and Beau recording him, probably making Keeks.


I couldn't help but admire the way the sunlight reflected off Jai's sleeve of tattoos, making them glisten against his tanned skin. His hair was styled upwards and slightly messy from Beau's attack and his eyebrow piercing caught the sunlight every now and again, making my heart flutter. He really was perfect in every way.


"He really cares about you, you know."


I heard James' voice break through my thoughts. I realised he must have noticed me staring at Jai and I nodded my head.


"I know. I'm a lucky girl." I replied simply turning my gaze back to Jai who was now on Skips back chasing after Beau.


"I've never seen him look the way he does when he's with you," James carried on. "It's like he's a whole new person. It's the better version of himself."


I stayed silent, slightly awed at James' words. Could someone have such a big effect on someone's life? Someone's personality? It seemed almost bizarre. But then it dawned on me that ever since I had met him, my attitude towards the world had completely changed too.


Despite everything that had happened to me, every day was a new adventure with him. Even if it was just going for a drive around town, it might as well have been a trip to Rome. He made everything exciting. I met James' steady gaze and smiled.


"He's changed me too." I said softly. I looked back at Jai and at that moment he jumped off Skips back and looked at me. His gaze met mine and he smiled perfectly at me. I sighed and smiled even wider.


"More than you know."
