I grimaced and waited for the burn to come. It took me a few seconds to realise it wasn't there. I breathed a sigh of relief with the wonder in the back of my mind questioning why I hadn't gone up in flames. I looked around the foyer and took in the expensive chairs and lamps.
Jayce glanced over at me then the rest of the house. I saw him stop and slowly turned his head towards me, a shocked expression on his face. He took a step back and grabbed behind him. I was confused because I had never seen Jayce not cool and collected except in the cell. Now he was turning even whiter and had stopped breathing all together.
I ran towards him and out of the sunlight to catch him as he fell. I was on the floor holding Jayces limp head. I screamed out for Layla who had disappeared. I was running through my mind listing everything Jayce could have seen. I whipped around, still screaming for Layla, looking to see if anyone was behind me. It was empty. I had never been more confused.
Layla came sprinting around the corner and ran over to Jayce, pushing me out of the way. She examined him all over and sighed.
"He just fainted. Could you be any louder? I do have neighbours you know!" She muttered at me a cruel smile on her face.
"Anyone would think you loved him or something......." I moved to hit her for even suggesting it but I stopped. Why had I been so worried? Jayce was the one who had got me into the mess. I should have been happy that he might have died.......but why wasn't I? Maybe I am growing to like him.
I heard Layla grunt from the effort of lifting Jayce. I picked him up and followed her into a bedroom and laid him on the bed. I sat beside him and looked at Layla.
"Why did he faint?" I asked Layla, as if asking her if she did it.
"What do I look like, a crystal ball?" She yawned. "I have been waiting for you guys for hours. You look your time."
"What do you mean?"
"Someone asked me to wait for you two and help you. I am gonna go to bed, night. Oh and just sleep in any room." She grinned at me and I was confused for a second.
"I am NOT sleeping with Jayce!" I yelled at her back.
"Denial." She muttered.
"Why not?" said Jayce, stirring with the usual grin already on his face. I looked at him, eyebrow raised.
"Because you're an ass!" I retorted and he smiled.
"Love you too, Ash."
I sat there for a few moments before opening and closing my mouth a couple of times.
"What Ash I kinda want to sleep." One of Jayces eyes was open and it was staring at me.
"Why did you faint?" I blurted out and winced. Whoops was meant to say that gently.
"Well to tell you the truth...."
"Yes!" I leaned closer to him and he grinned and wrapped his arm around my waist. I will ignore that. For now.
"When you stood into the sun instead of burning your face kind turned to dust, old dust." My first reaction was that Jayce was lying then it was ew then why.
"I am going to sleep now." He muttered before turning and plunging his face into the pillow. His arm was still around me and I tried to move it to no avail. I was stuck so I gave in and lay my head on the pillow and watched Jayce sleep. Layla was going to give me shit tomorrow but hey I am used to it. I am friends with the asses of all asses, ladies and gentlemen, Jayce Adair.
I woke up the next morning with Jayces arm still around me and Layla standing in the door way, grinning ear to ear.
"Good night?" She asked that annoying smirk still on her face. If Jayces arm wasn't still around me I would have used my fist to wipe it off. I picked up one of the pillows off the floor and started hitting Jayce with it. It took three or four good hard hits to wake him up. Jayce sat up rubbing my head then looked at me.
"You stayed." He smiled at me. Ok he must be delusional; I think I hit him a bit too hard with that pillow.
'Yep." I raised both my eyebrows and looked at Layla. "Where can you get good food around here?"
"The fridge." She said and walked out. I motioned for Jayce to stay here and followed her out into the hall.
As soon as I stepped out I was swung into a door with Layla breathing down my neck.
"Stay away from Jayce, he is mine!" She growled her teeth now as sharp as mine.
"I don't want him, go for it!" I murmured in her ear.
"But he wants you!" She hissed. New development there.
"You can have him, I don't even want to think about stuff like that until this whole thing is over." I yelled and pushed myself forward and threw her off me. She landed on the floor a few metres from where I was. I walked over to her and leaned down so I could whisper in her ear.
"Remember this, elf, you might be strong but I am vampire therefore will always be stronger than you. Remember that." I finished tapping my temple. Her eyes narrowed and I turned on my heel and walked back into Jayces room.
Bitch.
"What are you thinking about, babe?" Jayce asked, sitting on the bed with his shirt off. Must not focus on that fact.
"One, nothing and two I am so not your babe." I rolled my eyes at him.
"Not yet." He smiled and I picked up a pillow and chucked it at him. He caught it easily and laughed. I swept my gaze over Jayces toned, bare chest. I shook my head and looked back at him.
"See something you like?" He asked and I poked my tongue at him.
"Yeah, your mouth shut." It was Jayces turn to stick his tongue out at me.
"Are we having fun here?" asked a voice behind me coldly. I smiled at her sarcastically and Jayce did the same but warmly.
"Ummm, Layla is there anything to eat here." I turned my gaze to Jayce who was pulling his shirt over his head. Dammit I mean good I was getting sick of staring at his bare chest. Ok no I wasn't but no one was going to learn that little fact.
"Human food or human? Layla asked, a slight giggle in her voice. I rolled my eyes at her back and made a funny face which Jayce laughed at. Layla whipped around and glared at me.
"If you are finished acting like children then I will show where the food is." She got up quick and stormed out the door. We followed but not before Jayces made a comment.
"Who said we were finished?"
I shot Jayce a look and he shrugged, smirking an expression that I both loved and loathed.
Layla led us in to a room that resembles those kitchens in the movie that the millionaires owned. I sighed, my mother had made me move out when I was twelve and my home was only worth my life savings... being twelve I didn't have a life savings obviously so I pretty much lived at Jayce's house because his parents welcomed me there and they were nice enough to give me a room at the opposite end of the house to Jayce.
It's not like I openly admitted to his parents that I had hated Jayce it's just that they seemed to pick up a stressed and angry vibe when we were in the same room. Well I never complained.
Layla sort of did a type of dance to the fridge, man she had problems, first a psychotic bitch and now a wanabe pixie.
Great I was going to be killed in my sleep by a crazy chick!
"Well I've got bananas, mars bars, tofu and...blood" she looked up at us, "I suppose you guys are definitely hungry for the tofu" she said jokingly flashing Jayce a smile, he smiled back but I gagged.
Jayce looked at my questioning my noise. I just rolled my eyes and walked over to grab a mars bar and a small plastic bag of blood that was probably from a blood bank.
A thought crossed my mind, while Jayce grabbed the same selection of food from the fridge as I had, I frowned at Layla and asked, "Who exactly told you we were coming cause we didn't even know till we came through the portal?"
Layla flipped back her long hair and mumbled something then quickly said, " Hey lets watch I've actually have got it hooked up to the Tenebrae's channels.
