The huge ancient clock in the Kings Cross station read 10:40 when Luke reached the stone steps that lead down to platform 9 and 10. He was supposed to meet up with Calum here at 10:45, but judging by the noise and the shouting voice of Michael Clifford, Calums and Lukes best friend, they had arrived early. Michael Clifford was Calum's best childhood friend and the school's prankster.
Luke was about to descend the stairs when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned and was met by Ashton Irwin who was grinning from ear to ear.
"Hey Luke mate," he smiled, "How's it going?"
"Hey," Luke smiled and gratefully accepted the hug the older boy offered him. Luke had known Ashton all his life. The curly haired boy had grown up in the same orphanage as him and the two boys had always had a special connection as the only kids capable of doing magic in the house. It had been their little secret and Ashton and Luke had been good friends, but three years ago Ashton had moved in with his girlfriend and they barely saw each other ever since. Ashton was in his last year of Hogwarts now, in Ravenclaw. Luke hadn't been surprised when he had gotten sorted into Ravenclaw, Ashton was super smart and had known the answer to all of Luke's problems when he had been younger.
"It's going very good," Luke smiled while Ashton released him.
"Glad to hear that," he smiled, "do you have someone who travels with you? If not, you can always sit with us," he smiled and gestured over his shoulder to where his girlfriend was smiling and giving Luke a small wave.
"Oh that's okay. I am meeting up with Calum and Michael Clifford," Luke smiled. A loud crashing sound was heard from the bottom of the stairs. "That would be him, I suppose," Ashton laughed.
"Yeah," Luke gave a lopsided grin, "I better get going." He gestured over his shoulder in the general direction of the cussing voice of Michael's mum.
"Okay. Take care, Lukey," he smiled and squeezed Luke's shoulder. "You too," Luke smiled and turned to descend the stairs, "See you around!"
Luke caught sight of Michael standing a few feet away from his parents, his mum had stopped scolding him. Instead he was surrounded by Calum and a few of Calums friends from the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
Michael was wearing black Jeans, black combat boots and a pale blue shirt with a silver arrow up and down the front and back of the shirt, it was a shirt of his favorite Quidditch Team, the Appleby Arrows, who were from his Hometown in North England. His hair was the same silver as the arrows, probably even dyed by hand this time since they weren't allowed to do magic outside of Hogwarts yet.
Instead of paying attention to the conversation though, Michael was constantly watching a girl who was sitting on her suitcase in the corner of the plattform. She had her vibrant blue hair tied up in space buns, wore a black skirt, fishnet tights, Doc Martens and a Ravenclaw sweatshirt, her ears were covered by her headphones. Luke smirked. He knew Michael had had a big fat obvious crush on Ashley since their third year, but he never made a move. Something both Luke and Calum loved to tease him about.
Finally, Luke's eyes drifted from the dark girl to his own personal sunshine.
Calum was talking to some of his fellow quidditch players and was in his Hogwarts Hoodie, sweatpants and black converse. His broad muscular frame and tanned skin sometimes made Luke swallow hard and then wonder if he himself looked like a corpse whenever he stood next to Calum. Luke was all skinny and pale, long limbs and awkward posture.
Just when Lukes brain was close to losing itself in an endless circle of questioning if his black skinny jeans and Blink-182 hoodie had been a bad choice of clothing since the black material probably made is skin look even paler than usual, Calum looked up towards the staircase on which Luke had stopped midway to watch the scene and their eyes met. A huge bright smile broke across his face and even from up there, Luke was sure he could see Calums chocolate brown eyes sparkle. Luke wasted no time. His legs carried him down the stairs and right into Calums arms.
"Hey Lukey," Calum mumbled.
"I've missed you," Luke whispered.
"Missed you too," Calum whispered back.
"Hey, I want a hug, too," Michael complained after the two boys had held onto each other for quite some time and Luke laughed before he let go of Calum. He gave Michael a hug and then went over to greet Michael's parents, Calum and Michael on his heels to grab their things. Michael's parents travelled with Calum and Michael to Kings Cross every year since Michael lived only a few streets away from Calum. He had moved there from North England when he was a kid and Calums parents never cared enough to take Calum to Kings Cross anyways, so Michaels parents jumped in.
"Hi Mr and Mrs Clifford," Luke smiled and went in to shake Mr Clifford's hand while Mrs Clifford gave him a tight side hug.
"Hi Luke, nice to see you sweetie," she smiled brightly.
Honestly, Luke didn't know how they could be so happy to see him. Calum and him had slept over at Michael's house earlier this summer and let's just say things got a little out of hand and they ended up burning a hole in the floor of Michael's bedroom.
But Luke suspected having Michael as their son prepared them for way worse things. Plus, Luke thought that he was probably the most responsible one out of the three of them.
"Let's go then," Calum smiled. He had his guitar strapped to his back, his suitcase on Michael's cart and his broom in his left hand. He was now extending his right hand towards Luke and offered him a soft smile.
Luke's heart fluttered like it always did when Calum looked at him intensely and grabbed his hand.
With one last wave to Michael's parents he let Calum pull him towards the brick wall between Platform 9 and 10. After six years, it was still a strange and scary feeling to be running towards a thick wall, full speed. But Luke knew the crash wouldn't come, and more importantly, Luke trusted Calum. He trusted him with his life.
So Luke closed his eyes and let Calum lead the way, his small warm hand guiding Luke through the darkness.
