Minerva McGonagall sat on the small steps in the Great Hall of Hogwarts and watched the countless witches and wizards chat in small lose groups. Some were hugging, some crying or mourning and in between, healers rushed to and from to take care of the injured. McGonagall couldn't quite process what had happened yet, even tough they all had been preparing for this for month, years even.

Everything had happened so fast in the end.

And now, Lord Voldemort was defeated and the wizarding world could finally take a breath. She knew that this day would go down in history as the day Harry Potter defeated the greatest Dark wizard of all time and that generations of students at Hogwarts will be taught what had happened on the grounds of this old castle tonight.

"Professor?," someone tapped her shoulder and she blinked out of her thoughts and turned around to see Rubeus Hagrid standing in front of her.

"We went out to search for survivors in the hiding places of our allies. We found this little guy in a flat near the center of London," Hagrid said and awkwardly held out a little bundle of blankets.

McGonagall carefully took it, not wanting to hurt or disturb the tiny baby who was sound asleep.

"Well then let's bring him to his parents," McGonagall smiled, "they are probably worried sick."

"Well," Hagrid mumbled,"it's... well it's the Hemmings' son... and he is an orphan now..."

McGonagall stared up at Hagrid and breathed out a quiet 'no'. She looked down at the tiny sleeping baby in her arms, then up at Hagrid again.

"What..," McGonagall stuttered, "what are we gonna do with him?"

"Dunno, I never was good with kids, professor. Probably what we'll do with the other orphans, there'll be quite a few after tonight. Thought you might've figured something out, since you're the new headmistress of hogwarts and all..," Hagrid trailed off at seeing McGonagall's panicked expression. She hadn't thought about any of the responibilities yet.

The baby began to blink and suddenly opened his eyes.
Mcgonagall looked down and was met with Crystal blue eyes staring up at her. The baby let out a happy noise.

"Hello," Minerva whispered and held her hand out. The baby wrapped his tiny fist around Minerva's pointer finger.
In that moment, something inside Minerva's heart changed.

"I will search for a nice home for him," Minerva said, looking up at Hagrid, then looking down at the baby again, "Liz and Andrew were one of our closest friends and brightest fighters after all. I owe them that much."

"Don't worry little one, I will protect you," Minerva whispered.

Little did she know that "looking for a nice home for him" would turn into "literally adoption him". But, looking back she wouldn't change a thing.
