Holden gulped as he saw that the guitarists, the drummer, and the rest of the mates had gotten ready in their position, the only empty spots being the two microphone stands. He was standing at the side of the stage, waiting for Larry's cue.
A minute later, Larry signaled for Holden to step up the stage, and went off without another word or gesture. By this time, Holden's mind was frustrated as hell since there was still no sign of his partner, hence confirming Larry's words that she wouldn't make it tonight.
How good would it be, if Larry was just trolling him.
Once Holden took his position in front of one of the empty microphone stands, the music ensued. As ridiculous as it might sound, he had actually prepared himself to just up his voice an octave when the female part comes.
Verse one was nearing, and he braced himself.
Hey, I was doing just fine before I met you,
I drink too much and that's an issue,
But I'm okay.
Hey, you tell your friends it was nice to meet them
But I hope I never see them
AgainHolden could hear the audience - especially the ladies - cheering him on. But, that only made him feel worse because he knew the next moment, they were going to be so disappointed when the female verse came in.
He continued on with the song, deciding to worry about the issue when it comes.
The interlude came, and Holden was constantly taking in deep breaths to get himself ready. He kept his eyes on the entrance of the pub, not willing to make eye contact with anyone.
As the music cue came, he sucked in hard, and was about to release it when another voice beat him to it.
You, look as good as the day I met you
I forget just why I left you,
I was insane
Stay and play that Blink-182 song
That we beat to death in Tucson,
OkayHe was so focused on bracing himself, that he didn't realize another figure had stepped onto the stage - right next to him.
Holden turned - right about the same as she did - and their eyes met.
He couldn't have felt more grateful, than ever.

Short StoryIt is known that you can't have high hopes in someone you meet in a pub. But a microphone in hand could make a whole lot of difference.
