"Hi," Holden greeted once the night was over.
He didn't want to approach her during their break time, fearing that ten minutes wasn't enough for whatever he wanted to say.
"Hey."
"Can we talk?"
"Sure."
"Your place, perhaps?"
"... Okay."
Thirty minutes later, they sat away from each other in Kayla's room - each taking a spot on the edge of the bed.
"What do you want to talk about?"
"About the guy."
"Oh."
"Is he really your boyfriend?"
"..."
"Kayla?"
A tear escaped, rolling down her cheek.
"Shit, Kayla. What's wrong?"
Holden had scooted closer to Kayla, but didn't dare to touch her. Not without her permission, of course.
Sensing that his shoulder was close enough, Kayla leaned in and rested her head on his shoulder, as another tear trickled down.
"Babe, what's wrong?" he asked, desperate to find out the cause of her sadness.
"He's my ex-boyfriend."
Bastard, Holden silently cursed.
"He came the other night, wanting to get back together."
"So... what was your answer?"
"I refused. He was really heartless when he made it clear that he wanted to end things between us. Even though many had told me that he's not worth it, it still hurts like a bitch."
The corner of Holden's lips twitched, as it was the first time he heard a curse word coming out of Kayla's mouth.
"Well, he doesn't deserve you. Did he hurt you, or anything? I heard the sound of smashing....the other day."
"Nope. It's just that he was really emotionless with his words, like the two years we had together was nothing at all. As for the smashing, he accidentally knocked over the vase when he threw his temper, knowing I wasn't going to say yes."
"What happened, y'know, after I left?"
"He was making a big fuss out of your appearance, and started throwing insults at me. I chased him off almost immediately."
Holden breathed out, feeling relieved.
"Thank goodness you didn't."
"Huh?"
Holden smiled, brushing away a tear on her face. "It's good that you didn't take him back."
"And why is that so?"
"Because you have someone else, who's waiting for you; someone else, who's waiting to be with you."
"Someone else, who's waiting for the chance to love you."
