"Here you go," an old man behind the counter pushed the packet of fried rice towards Holden.
"Thank you," Holden said, getting a plastic spoon out from the basket.
The old man nodded, giving Holden a wide grin. "How have you been, young man?"
"I just ORD-ed, and am taking up a temporary job right now."
He patted Holden on the back of his shoulder. "Great job man! Now that NS is over, you should be all grown up huh. What job are you having?"
Holden smiled. "Thanks. I'm currently a singer at Cerulean Pub."
"Ah, nice choice. That pub's really good. So, going all nocturnal now?" The old man laughed.
Holden nodded in agreement, and took a quick glance at his watch. "I hate to stop, but I've got a show in two hours' time. I'll see you soon."
He exchanged goodbyes with the old man, and made his way back to his apartment for dinner before he had to be out again.
Tonight was a duet again, which was something he was looking forward to since the last one had been four days ago.
Whenever there wasn't a duet, it would be an individual single throughout the night. That meant he wouldn't bump into Kayla unless she decided to be an audience for the night, and vice versa.
As Holden gobbled down his dinner, he made up his mind to be at the pub earlier. He was hoping that someone else would be there early too, and they would then have a bit of time to strike a conversation before they were off for the show.
He wanted to call up to check on Kayla to see how she was doing, but he mentally cursed when he realized he hadn't asked for her number. Since all the songs that they sang together were original versions, there wasn't a need for rehearsal, so they didn't necessarily had to contact each other.
Instead, he received a call from Larry. "Larry?"
"Hey, just calling to remind you on tonight's show." Holden frowned, because Larry had never made reminders to him.
"That's all?"
"And there will be a substitute tonight. Kayla couldn't make it."
"Oh." Disappointment flooded his heart.
"Alright, see you in a bit then." The call ended.
Holden continued with his dinner, making sure that he left at such a timing that would only get him to reach on the dot.

For every Singaporean son, it's compulsory for them to serve National Service (NS) for a period of two years, unless they sign on as regulars in the army.
ORD stands for Operational Ready Day, which marks the end of their NS journey and the start of their civilian lives once again!
thank you so much for reading!

Short StoryIt is known that you can't have high hopes in someone you meet in a pub. But a microphone in hand could make a whole lot of difference.
