Hopeful fighter

CHAPTER 4

The squad walks through Millcity Stadium and is mesmerized by the amazing players standing in front of them. Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach, Tobin Heath, Kelley O'Hara and many others are waiting for Saint Claire's varsity team to come and practice with them.

Coach Davis approaches coach Jill Ellis and the girls make their entrance in the stadium. Millcity field is huge and for most of the players it's the first in here. They're welcomed by the USWNT players, who immediately ask for their names.

G:"Hey, my name is Georgia, I'm 17 and a senior in high-school. I'm the team captain and these girls are my teammates. I play forward."

T:"My name is Taylor, I'm a senior as well and I play defense."

A:"I'm Alison and this is my twin Charlotte. We're both seniors and I play midfield."

C:"And I play defense"

C-L:"It's really nice to meet you girls"

Z:"It's a pleasure for us to be here, by the way I'm Zoe and this is my friend Grace, we're juniors"

A-M:"It's good to have you here"

T-H:" And what's your name?... Hello?"

A:"Hum? Oh, I'm sorry. My.. My name is Abigail, I'm 15 and I'm a sophomore. I.. I play goalie"

A-K:" Are you okay? You're shaking..."

A:"Y-Yes, it's nothing"

"She's shaking, she must be scared. Should I hug her? Should I tell her that everything is fine? No, she must hate me for leaving her" though Hope. "She's a good kid, great marks and great soccer skills. Man, she's talented.. I wish I could do something..."

A-H:" Wow, you're a goalie cool! I'm Ashlyn and you'll be working with me, Hope and Alyssa"

A:" O-Okay"

The girls are split in four groups. Abigail is working with Hope Solo, Ashlyn Harris and Alyssa Naher. Taylor and Charlotte are working with the defenders: Ali Krieger, Kelley O'Hara , Julie Johnston and Becky Sauerbrunn. Alison and Grace are training with the midfielders: Carli Lloyd, Allie Long, Tobin Heath and Morgan Brian. Georgia and Zoe, forwards, are playing with Alex Morgan, Christen Press and Mallory Pugh.

An hour and half later, the teams decide to take a break.  They all run to the benches, but Hope and Abigail are left behind. Hope is sitting by herself on the field, Abby approaches her and shyly asks

A:"Hum, are... are you okay?"

H-S:" Yes"

A:" You're a great player"

H-S:" Thanks, you're pretty good as well"

A:" How long are you staying here, Hope?"

H-S:" two weeks, why?"

A:" Do yo think we can... yeah... I don't know... hang out sometimes?"

H-S:" Hum, I'm not sure... sorry"

A:" Why?"

H-S:" Because it's not safe, for both of us"

A:" What do you mean?"

H-S:" I mean, Abigail, that staying together will bring back our past and..."

A:" And you don't want to bring your past back because you're too scared to admit that you had no right to abandon me. You were selfish, you thought that a baby would have damaged your career"

H-S:" It's not like that"

A:" Oh, and what's it like? Let me tell you. You didn't want me because you are not capable of loving anybody but yourself. I don't want to have to deal with you anymore. You're nobody to me."

And Abby, desperate and crying, leaves the field and runs away, in a place where she knows nobody will be able to find her.
