Hopeful fighter

CHAPTER 13

Abigail and Mallory wake up held in each others arms and they make their way to the breakfast room. Everybody is already here and, as the two younger players enter the room, Hope immediately tell her daughter to sit at her table with Carli and Mal. She seems angry.

Hope:" Abigail I give you three seconds to tell me where the hell you have been tonight" (angry)

Abigail:" I was in the living room with Mal watching "The fault in our stars" and we fell asleep"

Hope:" And why were you in the living room instead of being in your beds?"

Abigail:" Because I couldn't sleep"

Mallory:" Yeah, same. Sorry Hope"

Hope:" It's fine Mal. But Abby, you're grounded..."

Abigail:" What? (shouting) I am supposed to go on a date with Luke tonight"

Hope:" Well, tell Luke you will see him next week"

Abigail:" Oh my God, are you fucking serious?" (shouting)

Hope:" 1) watch your mouth 2) yes, now go up to my room and get ready for practice"

Abby goes to her room and starts crying. She desperately wants to go out with Luke. She gets ready for practice and she sits on the bus. Since she doesn't want to deal with her mother, she takes sit in the front, next to Julie.

Julie:" Is there any particular explanation about you sitting here next to me?" (smiling)

Abigail:" Yeah, Hope grounded and I am mad at her" (annoyed)

Julie:" Why are you grounded?"

Abigail:" Because Mal and I fell asleep in the living room while watching "The fault in our stars"

Julie:" Sorry about that, Hope tends to be over-protective with me as well ahah. She just cares about you"

Abigail:" It's kinda new to me, since I used to be alone all the time and I could do whatever I wanted to do"

Julie:" Well, get used to this. Plus, she's your mother, it's her job to be annoying and protective... sometimes ahah."

Abigail:" Why is Hope protective with you too?"

Julie:" Because few years ago I was the youngest and Hope was always there for me anytime I needed somebody, so I started to call her "mum" as well" (laughing)

Abigail:" Awe this is cute. Wait, so you are basically my sister JJ!" (smiling)

Julie:" Yes I am Abby ahah!"

The gals arrive at the stadium and they practice, since they will be playing against Canada. But while they are playing, something happens. Hope, trying to save a shot from Carli, falls to the ground and hits the head. She lays down on the grass but she doesn't move and everybody starts running towards her. Abigail is shocked, worried and scared, she doesn't move from her spot, she just stands there, emotionless. She sees people running, screaming but she doesn't know what to do. Once Hope is brought away with an ambulance, Carli approaches Abby.

Carli:" She will be fine Abby. They don't know if she has a concussion yet and she won't be playing or at least one month."

Abigail:" Oh my gosh, thank God! I was so scared, I...I..." (crying)

Carli:" Shh...it's okay, come here kid"

The team decides to go back to the hotel and, as they arrive, Abigail is told to go to Jill's studio. She is worried and therefore she asks Mallory to join her. As they enter the room, Jill is talking to Dawn, the physiotherapist, and the discussion immediately stops at the sight fo the two young girls.

Jill:" Hello girls, come in"

Abigail:" Is everything alright coach?"

Jill:" Unfortunately not, Hope has a major concussion and she's out for at least one month, even if Dawn seems more positive"

Abigail:" So? What's the matter?"

Jill:" You are going to play against Canada in three days"

Abigail is feeling a mix of different emotions. She is scared, oh no kidding, she is literally terrified but happy and proud of herself.

Abigail:" Are you sure coach? I mean, Canada is a tough opponent and I am certain that Ashlyn and Alyssa have much more experience.... What if I fail?"

Jill:" We all make mistakes Abby, they make us stronger. And don't worry, I am sure you will have a blast. Your mum will be really proud of you."

Abigail:" I'm not sure this is the right decision coach"

Jill:" It is to me, now let's go to the dining room, I'm starving"

Mallory:" Yeah, same"

Abigail:" Just a sec, I want to call my mum"

Jill:" Alright, see you in ten"

Abby grabs her phone and composes Hope's number. She immediately picks up.

Hope:" Hello?"

Abigail:" Hey Hope, sorry to bother you...mm something happened here"

Hope:" What happened? Are you okay sweetie?"

Abigail:" Yes, it's just... Jill told me I am going to play against Canada. I am scared"

Hope:" Don't be scared honey, you're a great player and you'll do great, I'm proud of you honey, I really am proud, you deserve this. And... I'm sorry about this morning, I shouldn't have argued with you."

Abigail:" It's fine. Besides, you're my mother, it's your job to be annoying, sometimes" (laughing)

Hope:" I'm pretty sure this comes from JJ" (laughing)

Abigail:" It does come from Julie. Anyway I gotta go, bye Hopey, love you lots"

Hope:" Love you too sweetheart"
