It's game day and in Portland the atmosphere is mesmerizing. The gals are doing their warm-ups and the speaker starts announcing their names.
"And there's the newbie, number 15 goalkeeper Abigail Morris. She's a 15 year-old from Millcity, Oregon and she's going to be the starting goalkeeper today since Hope Solo is out, due to a major concussion.
Abigail starts feeling under pressure but Hope, from the bench, reassured her with a warm smile and a thumbs-up.
"Girls, I'm sure we're ready for this game" Jill Ellis says "we know that the Canadians are tough and aggressive but we have to focus and achieve our goals".
"Hey guys" Carli says "one nation, one team"!
The national anthems make the public cheer on the squads. As the game starts, the Canadian players make an enormous amount of faults, causing Morgan Brian a sprained ankle and Christen Press a torn knee. But all these faults don't stop the US team from scoring two goals with Carly Lloyd and Mallory Pugh. Suddenly, something happens: Becky Sauerbrunn, trying to save a shoot from Christine Sinclair, tackles another player and the referee calls a PK for Canada. Abby knows that this is her glory moment, it's now or never. Christine Sinclair, the Canadian star, shoots the ball towards the right part of the net, Abby dives in the same direction, stretches herself and the sees a cheering US crowd. She starts hugging all of her teammates but all she wants to do is hugging Hope. She sprints towards the bench and jumps in her mother's arms.
"Hope I did it, I fucking did it" shouts Abby.
"You did it Abby, I'm so proud of you babygirl", says Hope.
The game ends 2-0 and the gals celebrate. Defeating Canada is always a blast and Jill congratulates her players. After taking a shower, the team goes back to the Hotel and they decide to chill in the lobby.
Moe proposes a movie night and everyone agrees on watching "Pitch Perfect".
As the movie goes on, Hope leaves the room because of a phone call. As time goes by, Abby decides to look for her. She wanders through the corridors and she overhears a conversation between her mother and a male voice. She's too scared to enter the room so she stands outside.
"I promise we'll figure this out Hope", the male voice says "but Abby needs to know".
"I know and I'll tell her but not right.."
Abby slowly enters the room. She sits on her bed, waiting for an explanation. Her eyes are full of tears. She feels ignored, she deserves to know her past.
"Well, I'm waiting... I have the fucking right to know my past"  she says.
"I'm going to tell you every single thing sweetie", Hope says "you just need to let me finish and don't interrupt me till I'm done"
Abby slowly nods.
"As I already told you, I got pregnant at the age of 18. But I didn't tell you the truth. I was in love with a boy, deeply in love with him. He was a basketball player and he was the hottest boy in our college. We met for the first time in the library, funny hum? Well, after our first meeting we started hanging out together and yes, we fell in love. But he had a reputation, he was a "bad guy", he was the boy who usually had random sex with the hot chicks and who threw the best parties ever, and I... I was just a newbie. Well, basically honey, we made love and it felt so special, great but we were totally stupid and we didn't use protection. Once I found out I was pregnant, everybody left me, everybody but your biological father... well Abby, meet your father, Liam"
Abigail is shocked but wraps her arms around her mother and hugs her sincerely. Everything feels right in this moment. She's finally met her birth father, the missing piece in her family.
"May I have a hug as well", asks Liam.
Abby and Hope gladly hug him, in a warm, long embrace that seems to throw away all their past problems.
