PROBLEM XXVI| Clumsy Me
I was shaking shitless. Every once in a while—Scratch that, one after another shivers ran up and down my spine. Houston caught a hold of my hand, and his eyes lit up in amusement, “Gee, you're shaking. I’m sorry there isn’t a dance floor to dance on but I can take you to a club or something later.”
I smacked his chest with my shivering hand, “I don’t mean to seem poor but I’ve never been to such a luxurious place. I feel underdressed. If you tell me that we could turn around and go to some normal diner I would be really x10 happy, but if you tell me your parents aren’t here, it would work too. If they are—Just so you know, be prepared to live through the most embarrassing night of your life.”
Houston chuckled, “Now, you’re exaggerating.”
I scoff in return, “Tell me that when you can’t even look your parents in the eye because you’re so embarrassed.” He chuckled, “C’mon HoneyCakes, you can’t be that bad!”
A scoff escaped my lips again, “Watch me be that bad. I won’t even have to work,” I said, walking ahead into the elegant lighting. Everything my eyes fell upon, screamed luxury and a million dollars. The way the people were dressed, compared to them, I felt like I’d worn rags. Houston caught upto me and held my hand. He looked at me looking around with a face screaming discomfort. He nudged me, making me look at him, “Don’t worry, you look good enough.”
Even though it was meant to be a compliment, it kinda sorta stung. Good enough? Weren’t guys supposed to say something more...encouraging?
I made a Bee-line behind Houston to the table he was stalking off to, as I still couldn’t help but look around. I hadn’t noticed the fact that Houston had stopped and stupidly knocked into his back, which in turn made me stumble on my feet and trip. I was hoping Houston would catch me so as to not make a fool out of myself at such an elegant place—Thankfully, he did. I sighed in relief and looked into Houston's green eyes which were filled with amusement. I quickly did a glance around and smiled as I saw that people hadn’t paid any attention.
I quickly stood back to my feet and was about to thank Houston when a throat cleared from behind. Snapping my head towards the sound, I saw a woman with blonde hair cascading down her shoulders, in contrast to the navy blue gown she had worn. Her hazel eyes twinkled with what I assume to be excitement. She smiled at me, “A good fall you had there,” She said, adding a wink at the end.
“Mom, stop it. I told you she was a clumsy one,” Houston said, laughing as I burned in embarrassment. He told her I was a clumsy one? There was no way I can ever sit with these people on the same table! Houston pulled out a seat for me and I took the seat as gracefully as I could. Houston sat beside me.
