My mother helps me pack up my supplies. Food, water, blankets and an extra pair of clothing just in case. While we're packing, I can feel my mothers eyes on me.
"What?" I ask with an airy laugh. My mother gives me a faint smile.
"You have grown so much, Moana," she says. I smile at her and she puts her hand to my face.
"When I was your age, my father engaged me to be married to the town farmer," she stated. My face went to an o shape and I gasped.
"Kāwika?" I ask. Mother laughs.
"Yes, Kāwika. But I was madly in love with your father," she laughs and ties together my pack of supplies, "Well, every girl was crushing on him. He was a dreamboat back in the day."
I let out a girly giggle.
"I think your father saw something in me. I don't know what it was. I was just a fisherman's daughter, nothing special," she looked off and smiled, "So we met in secret. A week before I was to be married, your father sent a request to your Grandmother to take me for his bride. And since he was the future chief, he got his way." She winks at me. I smile.
"I know you love Maui," Her smile starts to fade. I blush profusely.
"You always have," she laughs, "Heck, if I went to save the world with someone and became best friends, over time I would start to love them too. Especially someone so buff like Maui!" She playfully nudges my arm and I smile while my face is turning red.
"And I know your spirit Moana," she kissed me on the forehead, "I know you when you want something so bad you wanna fight for it. Well, you must know things you love you fight for. But you must also remember, there are different approaches and discernment play key factors in fighting." A tear rolls down my face, and I embrace my mother.
"I love you, mom," I say. She rubs her hand through my hair.
"I love you too, Moana," she smiles as we pull apart, then wipes a tear that was rolling down my face, "Go get Kahõkū." I get up and suck up my tears and walk out the rations tent.

I go to the coast where they have already pulled out my boat.
"Good luck Moana," my father says, giving me a kiss on the forehead. I'm still very upset about him banishing Maui, so I give him a faint smile in return.
"Bye Dad," I say. I get on my canoe, the one I used to sail with Maui to restore the heart. I throw my hair in a messy bun and start to sail. I look back at my fellow tribesmen and wave. They are all cheering things like "good luck!" and "you got it, Moana!" Some are praying for safe travels. Soon my island becomes just a green speck, my people's cheers overruled by the sea.

"Ina," Tui greets the town guard on a secluded part of the island, near the coast. Ina nods his head in reverence to the former chief.
"Moana is out alone on the ocean," Tui explains, "as you must already know. At least, we think she's alone. Since I cannot go with her on this trip, we don't know if Maui will join her. She's far off the reef by now, but I want you to follow from a distance. If you see anything unusual, like a bird turning into a human, for example," Tui handed Ina a thick bow and a huge stack of arrows, "take your aim and shoot."Author's note
