I gripped Ashley's hand tighter as I started to walk faster. She didn't protest, although I knew she was having trouble keeping up with me.
The sun was setting and I hated being outside at night. Nothing good ever comes out of the dark.
I could hear footsteps running behind me and it only took one whiff of the air to know that it was Aidan.
“Beckett, stop!”
I could hear the urgency in his voice but I didn't care. We had to lose him somehow. I sighed when I realized what the only way to do that was. I lifted Ashley into my arms, ignoring her squeal of surprise and put her head against my neck. I looked around quickly before letting my wings escape my skin and lift us up into the air.
“Ashley, there's a lot we need to talk about,” I whispered.
She nodded against me, her face still hidden in my neck. I didn't stop until I saw trees. I gently landed on the grass and grabbed Ashley's hand again, leading her into the forest. We walked quietly and carefully, although being a higher being gave me heightened senses. I knew Aidan would be looking for us, along with who knows else. I stopped for a second to grab a bit of mud from the floor.
“I need to put this on you, okay? We don't want to attract any animals.”
Ashley eyed the mud in my hand wearily. “Then why are we in the woods?”
I sighed. “I told you there's a lot we need to talk about.”
I tilted her head up and moved her hair aside, allowing better access to her neck. I had to put the mud on her pulse points so Aidan couldn't smell her blood. I didn't know much about our world, but I knew enough.
I did the same to myself before wiping the mud off of my hands and grabbing Ashley's hand again.
“Did you know we're special, Ash?” I asked.
“My teacher tells us every day that we're all special,” she replied.
I snorted. “We're even more special than your classmates, more special than most people.”
“How?”
I didn't answer and instead followed the sound of running water. We were soon at a waterfall, which I'm sure looked gorgeous in the day time instead of ominous and creepy look it adopted at night. I led Ashley to large boulders, hoisting her up before climbing up myself. We were sat with our backs to the forest, looking at the waterfall.
“We're more special than most people in the way that...” I started. I wasn't exactly sure how to tell my nine year old sister that when she turned ten, wings would spurt from her back and she'd be able to fly. I tried to remember how my parents did it.
“You remember how mom always said that there was a place beyond the clouds, that people went to rest?” I looked at Ashley and noticed her eyes still trained on the water.
“Yeah, heaven.”
I nodded, although she didn't see it. “That's where God and his angels live. They look down to us every day, making sure we're alright.”
“Do you think they're looking over mom and dad?” Ashley's words surprised me. She never really knew our father, being only three when he left. And we never talked about him, except for saying that he wasn't around when Ashley asked.
“I suppose they are.” We stayed silent for a little before I remembered what I had to do.
“What if I told you that heaven is real? And that God and all of his angels are real?” I asked.
