I was quickly touching up my makeup when my phone buzzed. I assumed it was Kalea, who was going to drive us all to school today. Kalea is basically our mom when it comes to transportation now. It's great.
But the text wasn't from Kalea. Nor was it from Mallie or Dan.
It was from Luka.
Luka is my secret boyfriend, I guess you could say. I haven't told anybody about our relationship yet, mostly for Luka's sake. He wants to keep things private, I guess.
I want to keep things private, too. My mom would kill me if she found out that I had a boyfriend. I would probably be grounded until I moved out.
Every time my friends ask me if I have a boyfriend, I just say no. Just like Mallie. She probably as a secret boyfriend too. I'm not sure. She just hasn't been that open with us recently.
Anyway, Luka is really nice. He's pretty shy, and that's probably why he wants to keep our relationship so secret.
We always spend holidays together at Luka's house, and I just tell my mom that I'm going to a friend's house. We are super cautious about how we spend time with each other and where we hang out.
"Are you busy after school today?" Luka's text said. I smiled and set the makeup brush down that I was using and picked up my phone to respond.
"No, do you wanna hang out today?" I asked. My phone chimed a few seconds later.
"Duh," his text said. I giggled.
"Should I meet you at your house at around 4:30?" I replied.
"Sure. See you then. Ily," his text read.
"ily2" I replied, setting my phone down, excited for the rest of the day.
----------
I had just finished my last class of the day when I ran up to Mallie, Kalea, and Dan who were all walking together.
"Someone's anxious to see the results of the cast," Kalea said, giggling.
"I'm just really excited!!" I happily exclaimed. I was also excited to see Luka after rehearsal today.
"I'm just hoping that Trinity is working in the lighting booth again this year," Dan mentioned. We all started laughing.
We made some small talk until we arrived just outside the auditorium. I ran as fast as I could to the sign revealing who is playing which character. I looked down the list until I saw who was playing Madge.
Lana Lowbridge as Madge Owens.
"I got the part!" I shouted as Kalea moved to next me to look at the list as well.
"Oh my God, so did I!" Kalea said. I looked down one name below mine to see that it said "Kalea Jane as Millie Owens. I hugged her as Dan and Mallie approached us.
"Thank God Trinity didn't get a part," Dan said, looking at the list.
"Um, then what's that?" Mallie said, pointing at a name near the top of the list. I guess I was too excited to see who got any other parts.
Trinity Jones as Flo Owens.
"Are you kidding me?" I questioned loudly.
"How did she get the part of Flo?! She is such a bad actor!" Dan exclaimed a bit too loudly.
"I'm a bad actor? Well if I am, then how did I get one of the lead roles?" Trinity asked, approaching us.
Trinity was wearing a blue dress with bright, orange leggings and her everyday sports socks with her Birkenstocks. Her brown hair looked to be filled with knots and she was wearing absolutely no makeup.
"Well, in that case, congratulations on getting the role that you did, Trinity," Dan unhappily replied.
"Thank you," Trinity said, walking past us and into the auditorium. Or I though she was, until she turned back around to say a final word.
"Oh, and that's actress to you," Trinity said, trying to flip her short hair as she actually walked into the auditorium this time.
Dan sighed. "I'm so done already," she exclaimed as the four of us entered the auditorium and sitting in our usual spots near the front of the stage. Damian was sitting on the stage, with many papers scattered around him.
"Alright everyone, so as you saw, the cast for our production of Picnic has been posted. Today is going to be completely dedicated to the cast practicing their lines, the set and costume designers to start working on ideas for sets and costumes, and for the tech crew to start planning what they want to do technology wise. Your script packets are on the stage. Get to work!" Damian said as he released us all to start preparing.
I walked up to the stage and grabbed two script packets, one for Kalea and one for myself. I handed her the packet as Mallie started sketching out outfit ideas with Dan.
"I can't believe Trinity got a role in a play! She has never been cast for a major role ever," I exclaimed as I sat back down, sighing.
"Maybe she's a better actor thank you think," Kalea said. I started to flip through my script packet, using a yellow highlighter to highlight my lines. Dan and Mallie eventually left to go look at all of the old costumes that the school had for the play to see if they could use anything for previous years in drama.
Kalea and I read our lines to each other, and Trinity kept giving us glares. I glared back.
--------
Eventually, Mallie and Dan came back to sit with us and rehearsal ended for the day. I followed Mallie, Dan, and Kalea out of the school when I remembered that I was going to walk to Luka's house. I couldn't let Kalea drive me there, otherwise she would find out about my relationship with him. I wonder if she even knows who Luka is.
"Hey, I'm gonna walk home today, is that okay?" I asked Kalea. She had a somewhat confused look on her face.
"Me too, I need the exercise," Dan added. Oh?
How come Dan is walking home too? I don't think she has anywhere important to be, or she probably would have told us.
Everybody has secrets, I guess.
"Are you guys sure?" Kalea asked, slightly concerned.
"Yeah, I'm sure," I replied. Dan nodded In response.
"Well, okay. See you guys tomorrow then," Kalea said as she and Mallie waved and started walking to Kalea's car. I waited until Kalea's car left the school parking lot for them to leave. Dan did the same.
"See you later Lana," Dan said as she walked away.
"Bye!" I shouted back.
Now I can finally see Luka.
{Dan}
"Hey," I greeted Jay, sitting down next to him underneath the biggest tree in the park.
"Hi. How was your day?" Jay, my boyfriend asked me.
"It was okay, I'm just glad we could finally hang out," I responded.
"Me too," Jay said as he gripped my hand.
