"I can't wait to see which play won!" Kalea said with enthusiasm in her eyes.
The four of us were sitting in our usual seats in the auditorium, waiting for Damian to come out to announce which play had one the voting from yesterday. Kalea would not stop talking about it, as she was super excited to get back into acting, and I couldn't wait to start working on costumes. Lana and Dan seemed not as excited, as the two of them were on their phones, very focused on whatever the two were looking at.
"Me too! I'm just so excited for this season, you know?" I commented. Kalea nodded quickly.
"Of course! Doing this is just such a dream come true! Well for me, maybe not for others, but definitely for me!" Kalea exclaimed. I nodded in agreement just as Damian walked onto the stage and cleared this throat to get our attention. Lana put away her phone, and it took us a few tries to get Dan to stop looking at her Instagram feed.
"Welcome back everyone!" Damian greeted us. The four of us cheered, and so did a few others, still having some hype from yesterday left over.
"So, yesterday we voted on which pay we wanted to perform this semester. Last night Mr. Lawrence and I counted up the votes, and we have determined a winner!" Damian announced as the lights went down dramatically. I never would have guessed.
"The play that we will be performing at the Hawkins High School Summer Festival is.." Damian started sinisterly as a spotlight was placed around Damian.
"In The Heights!" He shouted as the lights turned back on the and first song off of the soundtrack rung throughout the large auditorium.
Kalea jumped up happily. "YAY!!" she shouted, doing a little dance in happiness. I stood up to join her, and so did Lana. Dan remained sat down.
"I know nothing about this play but yay!" she exclaimed. The three of us laughed.
The music slowly faded and the three of us sat back down.
"I have a copy of the script for each of you, so you may come up and take one. You may practice lines for a character you might want to try out for, or you could start thinking of ideas for set design, costume design, anything like that. Come up and get your scripts!" Damian explained as we all rushed up to the stage to get our scripts.
Kalea sat back down with hers, flipping through her script quickly.
"This is going to be so fun! Also easy, as I know all the lyrics to In The Heights already," Kalea mentioned.
"I do too!" Lana chimed in.
I smiled as looked through my script. I knew a few songs to the musical, but not as much as Kalea and Lana of course.
"Hey Dan, do you wanna start brainstorming on costumes in a minute?" I asked Dan, only to receive no answer. I looked up from my script to see Dan on her phone, smiling at it.
"Dan?" I tried again. Nothing. So I did something that has worked since seventh grade.
"Squirrel!" I shouted and Dan immediately dropped her phone and looked around the auditorium.
I have absolutely no idea why she does this. But it's the only way I can get for her to talk to me sometimes.
"Now that I have your attention," I begun, "look through your script and then lets start brainstorming on costumes."
Dan sighed. "Okay," she sighed.
"Hey, I thought you liked theater and helping me with costumes!" I exclaimed.
