I strode into the lunchroom, lunchbox in hand, and my brain free of worries.
Today was our first day back from our break between first and second semester.
We were given three days to take in the crash, I guess, and so we were going to have a very short week.
I walked over to our newly populated lunch table, only to be greeted by Grant with a "hey babe!" and to also be greeted by Dan and Jay, who dabbed in sync. They cackled loudly afterwards.
"I was hoping that you guys would leave the dab behind in 2016, but I guess some things come and go and others come and stay," I acknowledged as I sat down in between Grant and Lana and across the table from Dan, Jay, and Luka, who was sitting across the table from Lana.
"Hey guys!" Mallie greeted us as Mallie took a seat next to Dan and Jay and Fey waved at us just before she sat down next to Grant.
"Hey Ms. Not-So-Emo-Anymore," Dan greeted back, noting that Mallie had been wearing nothing but pastel pinks and blues since she dyed her hair. Mallie rolled her eyes.
"So, how are all of you doing?" Luka asked as he stole some of Lana's soft pretzel. Lana glared at him with a stare that could kill.
"I'm good," Dan and I replied at the same time. Dan laughed loudly. Thankfully not loud enough to attract Trinity.
Lana, Fey, and Jay nodded in agreement. Mallie sighed.
"Everything okay Mallie?" Dan asked, going from hyper to concerned within a matter of seconds.
"Yeah, just some trouble at home. Not a big deal though. I'm at Fey's house more than I am at home, and I can't tell if my mom hates it but also enjoys me not being around," Mallie exclaimed. Fey gave her a look of sorrow.
"Ugh, parent trouble is the worst," Lana acknowledged, emphasizing on the word "worst". Dan nodded in agreement.
I turned to Grant. "How are you doing? I haven't seen you in awhile since you left for the west coast for Christmas," I asked.
"I'm doing pretty good. Just impatient for the track season to start," Grant explained. I nodded in understanding. I know how much Grant loves track.
I opened up my lunchbox and pulled out the slices peach that I had packed for myself. I took one out of the bag it was in and ate it, smiling.
"Oh! I almost forgot!" Luka exclaimed as she pulled out seven pale blue envelopes from his backpack and handed one to each of us.
"What's this?" Dan questioned, looking at both sides on the envelope.
"Open it," he said with a smile.
We all obeyed and started to tear at the blue paper. I ripped off a big chunk of the envelope to reveal a white card inside. I took it out and read it out loud.
"You are invited to my 17th birthday party!" I read.
"Wait, Luka's birthday is coming up?" Dan asked, confused.
"Well, duh!" Jay responded, playfully pushing Dan. Dan smiled.
"It's tomorrow?" Mallie clarified.
Luka nodded. "Sorry about inviting you guys so soon, I hadn't thought about having a party until yesterday."
"I can't wait! This is gonna be so fun!" Mallie squealed before turning to Fey with a large grin across her face.
"Can't wait for what?" An unsettling voice said. Mallie's smile faded.
