After pulling up on the side of the street, I hopped out the car and made my way to the front door. I unlocked it and ran up the stairs to my parents’ bedroom, locking the door behind me. I could hear Chris bring Cathy in and close the door behind them. I tuned then out and laid on the bed, staring into their golden ceiling.

“Katrina! Stop jumping on our bed!” my mother was frowning at me. I continued to laugh and jump, putting her deeper into a bad mood. “John!” she yelled. My dad appeared from the hallway and laughed at me.

“Lillian, she’s a kid. Let her have her fun.” He soothed, walking in and wrapping his arms around her.

“She’ll never be properly raised if you let her do whatever she wants to.” My mother huffed. Daddy caught my eye and winked.

“And why does she have to be proper?” he teased. “She’s Katrina, not Proper.” I stopped jumping and started laughing. My mother wasn’t amused at all.

“John.” She warned.

“Look, she stopped jumping.” He pointed to my small laughing frame. “Sometimes the most unconventional way is the most efficient.” My mother nodded and started to smile.

“Katrina dear, want to have mommy play the piano for you?”

My ringing phone brought me back to reality. I sighed and sat up, reached into my pocket, and answered the aggravating device.

“What?” I growled into the mic.

“Wow, someone’s grumpy.” I heard Selina chuckle.

“What do you want?” I glared at the wall in front of me. “Did you know about this?”

“About what?” she sounded confused.

“I can’t come home!” I yelled. “There’s no way for me to leave this state! I have no legal license here so I can’t go into some other state to catch a flight back to Gotham!” the phone was silent for three long minutes. I was about to hang up when she finally responded.

“Kitten… I didn’t know…” she whispered and I could hear the lie in her words.

“You’re lying to me Selina.” I hissed.

“I didn’t think they could possibly shut out travel.” She said firmly. “I thought they were bluffing. I could tell you needed to go back there; something you needed to do soon. I didn’t mean to send you away permanently kitten.” Her voice started to break and I could feel the tears coming again.

“They did it.” I whispered. “I’m sorry momma.” I said into the phone before hanging up. I turned on Pandora Radio and The Thunder Rolls came on as I started to drift off.

“And the thunder rolls, and the lightning strikes. Another love grows cold, on a sleepless night; as the storm blows on, out of control. Deep in her heart, the thunder rolls.”

A smirk found it’s way onto my face as my vision blurred, and the music softened to a dull hum. There was a reason I learned to play the piano; I’d have to remind myself how it feels in the morning.

“Katrina! Are you alive in there?” Chris was banging on my door. I groaned and rolled onto my stomach, glancing at my nearly dead phone. It was eight in the morning… lovely.

“Go away! I want to sleep!” I yelled back, smiling to myself as I heard the door open.

“Katrina, come on!” he whined. It was as if a day never passed that we had been separated from the other; we were two souls meant to be friends.
