~Chapter 13~
Legolas follows Bolg North towards the Grey Mountains. I haven't actually travelled all the way to the mountains before, but I have heard Legolas talk about them whenever I would visit Mirkwood. Legolas' horse gallops smoothly along the narrow path on the foothills of the mountains. Although Bolg is out of sight at this point, we know that we are close on his trail.
Legolas' horse starts tossing his head and slows from a gallop to a trot.
"What's wrong? What do you hear?" Legolas asks the horse, while gently stroking it's neck.
I look around, listening for anything the horse could be spooked by. A twig snaps behind us, causing me to whip around, pointing my armed bow at anything that might move. Nothing.
"It's probably nothing," I mumble to Legolas.
Legolas nods in agreement and signals his horse to go back to a gallop. The horse does as it is told for a few steps before stopping completely.
"It's okay, there's nothing." Legolas says to the horse, signaling for him to go again.
The horse refuses again, tossing his head in defiance.
Then a small rock, tumbling down from the cliff face above us, bounces off of my should and lands on the path under the horse. I look up to see Bolg and his Warg perched on a ledge only mere feet above us.
"Legolas!" I shout as the Warg launched itself down on us.
The Warg swipes at me, its paw slamming into the side of my head and causing me to fall off of Legolas' horse. The horse neighs and kicks at the Warg in fright. I roll away from the horse's hooves and into the bushes that line one side of the path.
The Warg lets out a yelp of pain. The sound is followed by the pounding of paws, which is followed by hooves. I peek my head out from under the bushes and look at my surroundings. There is blood on the path, a lot of it. I can only hope that it does not belong to Legolas.
I debate whether or not to continue forward and try to follow Legolas into the Grey Mountains, but with light disappearing so quickly I decide it is too dangerous. I turn and walk along the path in the way Legolas and I came.
---
When I come to the northern border of Mirkwood, a thundering roar bellows across the land. The Dwarves must've made it to the mountain after all; and woken the dragon.
Maybe they will kill the dragon before it brings death and destruction to Laketown. I walk into the woods and go South. I know that if I go far enough south I will come across the Forest River and be able to follow that back to the Halls of Thranduil.
Another roar bellows out along with a crashing sound. As if someone slammed a hammer into the side of the mountain.
The blood in my veins turns to ice as the realization hits me, the dragon has broken free. I leap up the nearest tree, climbing through the branches until I can break through the top of the canopy. In the distance, I can make out the small town sitting peacefully on the lake and in the sky a large, dark figure flies from the mountain toward Laketown.
Tauriel is there, along with Fili, Kili, Oin, Bofur, and Bard and his children. They are all there, where the dragon is going.
"No," I whisper.
No, no, no. Maybe they left. Maybe Tauriel healed Kili and managed to get them out of the town shortly after Legolas and I left.
Deep down inside myself, I know that that is not true. I know that they are still in Laketown.
I race back down through the branches of the tree. When my feet hit the ground, I break into a sprint and race South, listening for the sound of the river.
I must get to Thranduil, I must get him to help the people of Laketown. I know that it might be too late by the time I get there, but I must try.
