~Chapter 9~
By night fall, every minute is more agonizing. Kili is unable to sleep due to the pain in his leg that seems to be spreading through his entire body. This, of course, causes me to not sleep so I can do what I can to make the pain stop.
"I don't know what to do." I whisper, staring down at the gapping hole in the Dwarf's knee.
"You're an Elf, aren't you?! Help him!" Fili snaps.
"I don't heal!" I respond shortly. "That was never something I was interested in. I am a warrior, I fight battles and keep my loved ones safe."
Fili's eyes narrow and he grips the fishing spear Bard provided for the Dwarves as makeshift weapons.
"Fili, leave Celaireth alone," Balin says. "She's doing was she can."
"She isn't doing enough!" Fili snaps.
"Quiet!" Thorin hisses from where he is perched by the window. "The bowman is gone."
"So?" I question, standing up.
"So, we can leave this place and get us some real weapons." Dwalin says, pushing passed me to get to the front door.
"But my father said you can't leave." Bain protests, but the Dwarves ignore him.
Even Kili gets up and follows the company out of the front door.
"Aren't you going?" Bard's youngest daughter looks at me with curious eyes.
"I have no reason to," I reply. "We need rest before we can reach that mountain. Here is better than any place we might find along the way."
---
I'm almost certain that the Dwarves aren't coming back when they haven't returned for over an hour.
"What's that noise?" Bain asks, looking out the window.
"It sounds like people yelling." I say, grabbing my bow and running out the door. I pause briefly and look back at Bard's kids.
"Stay here," I say before running down the steps and into the town.
The voices get louder as I near what I'm presuming is the center of the town. A large crowd of people forms a semicircle at the foot of a large building. Two men stand on the steps looking down at something I can't see. I recognise one of them to be Alfred, the one that stopped Bard when we were on our way into the town.
"Please don't be the bodies of Dwarves and a hobbit." I murmur to myself.
I push through the crowd, of people to the front.
"You have no right to enter that mountain!" Bard is saying, his angry gaze on Thorin.
"I have the only right." Thorin replies, his voice eerily calm.
I watch the armed men around the Dwarves closely.
A few people murmur amongst themselves about the prophecy and rumors of the mountain. A little boy standing next to me stares up at me and pokes at the dagger sheath attached to my hip. A woman, whom I assume is his mother, appears and pulls him away whilst scolding him.
My attention goes back to the man standing up on the stairs as he opens his arms and shouts "welcome!"
The crowd around us cheers and bids the Dwarves a suddenly warm welcome. My mind whirls with the sudden eruption of noise.
The only person not cheering is Bard. He stands completely still, his distressed eyes locked on me.
"You'll kill us all." He says, loud enough for only me to hear. "The dragon will kill us."
My stomach drops. Everything around me slows down as I process Bard's words.
The dragon will kill us. By us, I assume he means him and the townspeople. Why would the dragon go after the townspeople? Why not the Dw- oh! The prophecy. The prophecy that I heard of many moons ago rolls around in my thoughts.
"The bells shall ring in gladness at the mountain king's return, but all shall fall in sadness as the lake will shine and burn." I murmur the last part of the prophecy.
If the Dwarves go to the mountain, the dragon will destroy Laketown.
Everyone here will die.
