The next day after the lunch bell rang; Trevor was leaning against his locker. He wore a long red t-shirt, black cargo pants, and black shoes. Thoro walked next to him holding up his sagging pants. He too wore a red shirt that almost came to his knees. Tanesha and Miya were behind him.

“Aye dog, you comin’ with us to burger king?” Thoro asked.

“Naw man, I got plans,” Trevor answered, dapping up his friend.

“What, you gotta serve some hours?”

“Somethin’ like that,” Trevor replied. He withheld his true reasons.

“Aight, well you know where we gon be,” Thoro shrugged walking away.

“Bye Pyro,” Tanesha waved. Trevor watched his friends head down the hall and stuffed his hands in his pockets.

“Why the long face? A voice said, drifting behind him. Trevor recognized the voice and turned around to see India standing next to him. She had her hair in a long ponytail and wore a hot pink shirt, and light blue jean skirt.

“Cause I’m tired,” he responded. “Mrs. Clamps busted our ass today.”

“Aww,” India moaned in a sympathetic tone. She got a little closer to Trevor and nudged his shoulder with hers. “You’re a big boy. I’m sure you’ll be alright.” She joked.

“Man what you wanna do for lunch?”

“It doesn’t matter to me, you wanna got to burger King?” India suggested.

Trevor scrunched his face up. “Naw. I had that yesterday,” he lied. In truth, Trevor didn’t want to go because he knew his friends would be there; and wasn’t sure how India and them would get along. He knew India wouldn’t be a problem, but Thoro would. His best friend had a crude sense of humor, and Tanesha and Miya were his cheerleaders. “What about Subway? It’s right across the street.”

“Works for me,” India smiled. She followed Trevor outside and up the sidewalk. While walking, India couldn’t help but notice Trevor constantly flicking his lighter on and off. She’s seen him do this before and it’s always bothered her, if not just a little. “Are you alright Trev?” she asked in a curious voice.

“Why you wanna know?” He shot back, sounding rude.

India sighed, slightly annoyed. ‘Here he goes with his smart mouth’ she thought. “Cause, you playing with your lighter like that,” she informed.

“I mean if it’s botherin’ you, I’ll stop,” he offered.

            “It is…”

Trevor tossed the lighter in the air and caught it. “Ight,” He looked to his right and launched the lighter a good fifty feet away. India shook her head at his juvenile actions. “It was runnin’ out of fluid anyway.”

“Why you always playing with fire?” India asked.

“Because it’s fun,” Trevor answered. “You should try it sometime.”

“No, I think I’ll pass,” She commented. “Plus, if you play with fire, you get burned,”

Trevor shrugged his shoulders like he didn’t care. “Everybody get’s burned at least once in they life,” he said, sounding sarcastic. “Besides. Have you ever looked at fire?”
