CHAPTER V
IN WHICH IT IS NOT A DATE !

November 2 1969 ;

LILLY WOKE UP THE NEXT MORNING WITH HER head lying on Sodapop's chest, his arms around her waist. She looks up at him only to find him looking down at her.

"Good morning," She whispers quietly.

"Morning," He whispers removing his arms from her waist and they both scoot apart in sync.

"What are we doing today?" Lilly asks sitting up and rubbing at her eyes.

"I don't know," He replies watching her, "How about we start with breakfast?"

"Sounds good, what's on the menu?"

"Mm," Sodapop thinks for a minute, "Bacon and eggs." He gets up and walks to the other side of the bed bending down allowing Lilly to jump on his back.

"My favorite," She laughs as Sodapop runs out of the room, he drops Lilly onto the couch where Two-Bit sat drinking a beer and watching Mickey Mouse.

"Want some real breakfast, Two?" Sodapop asks him.

"Nah," Two-Bit replies, "I had some cake."

Sodapop nods and heads into the kitchen, Lilly follows after him. She sits up on the countertop watching as he grabs a frying pan and eggs and bacon.

"Hey Ponyboy," Lilly greets as he enters the kitchen.

"Hi," He mumbles sitting at the table and resting his head on the palm of his head.

"Want some eggs?"

"Yeah."

Soda whistles as he fixes their breakfast and Lilly tries to whistle along but fails, "I was thinking," Sodapop says, "That for lunch, you and me, could go out to a diner."

"Like a date," Lilly smiles.

"No," Sodapop says, "I mean yes? Maybe."

"So no," Lilly says.

"Right," Sodapop replies placing the food on plates.

"Okay, so for lunch to the diner but not as a date," Lilly says as she takes her plate and sits at the table.

"Great," Sodapop says joining Lilly and Ponyboy at the table, "It's not a date."

"I like this not-a-date," Lilly says as she takes a sip of her chocolate milkshake.

"Me too," Sodapop replies, dipping his fries in his own milkshake.

"So," Lilly says awkwardly.

"So," Sodapop repeats and Lilly cringes at the tension, he clears his throat, "You're—uh...really pretty."

"Thanks," Lilly blushes.

"I mean like really really pretty," Sodapop says.

"You're not too bad yourself," Lilly winks and he grins.

The pair sit in silence as they finish their milkshakes and fries, leaving together hand in hand.

"Where are you gonna go?" Sodapop asks her as they approach his house.

"Not sure," She replies swinging their hands back and forth, "Probably drive around."

"And then come back here?" Sodapop asks coming to a stop as they reach the gate.

"Of course," Lilly says.

"Good."

"Good," Lilly repeats.

"I had a good not—date," Sodapop says.

"Yeah," Lilly says, "Maybe we could go on a real date sometime."

"I'd like that," Sodapop smiles and Lilly gets into her car as he heads up to his house.
