Nicole's P.O.V.

about a week later

I wait at my gate for my brother, Cory. I just got off my flight to see my mom, and I landed in Boston.

Cory is 19 years old, so just 3 years younger than me. I've always wondered how he deals with this situation; living with our abusive father, and how he puts up with the fact that our mother's gonna die. I've never really asked him how he feels, and today, I'm gonna do so.

My mom was diagnosed with leukemia almost a year ago, and I broke down. However, I never found out how Cory felt about the sad news. He still hasn't moved out of my parents' house yet, and I wish he would. Both of us have been abused by our dad, and the minute I graduated from high school, I left that fucking house. I couldn't take the abuse. He's the reason why I really dread moving back in.

My mom, however, is definitely going into hospice. This means she's going to a home which provides care for the sick; mostly the terminally ill. She will die, unfortunately, but without any pain or suffering. Sometimes, I feel like I wanna die this way, because there's no pain. It's a peaceful death, which I think is beautiful. I may sound like a psychopath, but I'd feel more comfortable dying this way instead of feeling pain before I pass.

My thoughts are interrupted when I hear someone shout my name.

"NICOLE!"

"Cory?" I get up and run to hug him. "I missed you so much..." I tell him. I hadn't seen Cory since Christmas. We're pretty close, but I never get to see him.

"Hi, sis. You ready to go?" he asks.

"I guess so," I say to him.

"Everything will be ok, Nicki. I promise." Hearing him call me Nicki always makes me smile. He's called me that since he was a toddler.

"Hey, how do you feel about mom?" I ask after being in the car with him for almost a half hour.

"It's just devastating... I don't know what we'll do without her. I can't deal with dad," he tells me.

"Me neither. That's why I moved out right after I graduated from high school; I couldn't take the abuse," I say, suddenly remembering the times he abused both of us.

"Hey, so how was VidCon?" he asks, trying to move on to a happier topic.

"Good, I got a boyfriend while I was there," I say.

"I saw on Instagram. You guys are so cute!" he says.

"Thanks, Cory," I say with a smile.

Just then, I get a call from my mom. "Hello?"

"Hey, are you here?"

"Yes, Cory and I are on our way home."

"Good, good. I can't wait to see you! I've missed you." I smile as I hear the excitement in her voice. She's always so happy. That's something I'll never forget about her.

"I've missed you too, mom. I have amazing news to tell you when I see you," I say into the phone.

"Ooh, what's this about?"

"You'll find out!" I start to laugh.

"When will you be here?"

"In about 15 minutes or so."

"Great! I can't wait to see you. By the way, honey, I'm going into hospice in about a week. I'm sorry to break this to you, I didn't know when I could tell you."

"It's ok, mom. I understand. At least you won't suffer anymore."

"Exactly, sweetheart."

"I'll see you in a few?"

"Yep. I love you."

"I love you too, mom."

I walk into the house. I hadn't been in here in so long. I see my mom in the living room, laying on the couch, talking to her nurse.

"Nicole!" she says, opening her arms. I go over to her and give her a big hug. "How are you?"

"I'm good. How are you?" I ask.

"Not so good, I've been feeling weak all day. By the way, this is my nurse, Trisha," she says, pointing to her. "Trisha, this is my daughter, Nicole."

"Hi, Nicole. It's nice to meet you," says Trisha, taking her hand out to shake mine.

"Nice to meet you too," I say.

I take a good look at my mom. She looks pale. She looks like she's not slept in weeks. It's awful how this happened to her.

I don't wanna see her suffer anymore.

She's back in Massachusetts. Her being here will last about only 5 more chapters or so. I haven't decided. But I'm not gonna make a chapter about each day she's here. I'm gonna fast forward a bit. I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter -Tess
