When winter break ends, it's hard to tell its even January anymore. some of the snow is melted and it's not even wet out. Almost like it's autumn again. I grab my wind breaker and a coat in case it gets too cold out, then I head to the bus.
Chloe gets on the bus and sits next to me. A person behind us says, "oh look! I guess they ARE dating!!" And she points at us, drawing the attention towards the both of us.
"..." Chloe sits silently. I grab her hand and intertwine our fingers, then I lift her hand up.
"Yep!" I say as I let the people watching see it. I put our hands back down and I smile at Chloe.
When we get to the school, Chloe and I split off and go into our separate classes.
Gym. I see Chloe and when Mr. Johnson tells us to pick partners, I pick her. We then break apart from each other to practice, 'partner passing'. After gym, we split off again for the rest of the day.
On the bus, Chloe sits next to me once more. She asks, "is it okay that I come over tonight?" She looks at me and waits for a response.
"Sure"
---
Chloe gets off the bus and comes over to my house. We take a walk to a nearby playground and sit on the swings for abut and talk.
"So, how are you doing? You know, with your dad and everything." I ask, she looks up at me and shrugs.
"I don't know. I'm still shocked that he did drugs. My mom is working things out with the police. She has a lot of stress on her hands and she really missed my dad." She says. We walk over to the woods, where there is a tree that's fallen over. The tree connects with another tree, which has a makeshift ladder up to a tree house. I get on the tree with ease considering I've been on it before. She however, needs help. She tries to jump up to the top of the tree right away. She almost fell, but I catch her by the wrists. She lifts herself up and says thanks. We sit down for a while and talk for a bit.
As we talk she swings her legs, her cloth leggings gathering little pieces of wood and tree bark.
"How are you taking it?" I ask.
She looks up at the tree branches above us. She lets out a sigh.
"Not to well.." She can't really get the words out, you can tell it's a sensitive topic. I put my arm on her lower shoulder and rub her arm. I try to comfort her.
"Hey.... It's okay. I'm here for you." I say. She sighs and stops her legs from swinging. I begin to stand up and she asks, "Where are you going?"
I give her my hand and she takes it, I lift her up and tell her to follow. We go up into the tree house.
"Wow. How long has this been here?" She asks me.
"A long time. Almost my whole life. My dad built it before he died. He built it for all the neighborhood kids. But since he built it, we've grown up and I only come up here when I miss him. Cmon!" I say as I lead the way up the ladder. She continues to hold my hand as we climb. Her gloves almost falling off. She's wearing a maroon coat with a white scarf, black cloth gloves, cloth leggings, and fur boots. Very over the top compared to my fleece gloves, hoodie, jeans, and sneakers.
When we get to the top, I wipe some leaves down onto the snow below. There is dust covering everything in there, including two chairs, a table, and a few toys.
"Wow, it seems so nostalgic in here with all this old crap" Chloe says, I nod and then take a moment to chuckle. I pull out a chair, and say, "m'lady." She laughs, I'm trying to cheer her up. She sits and then I turn around. I rip open a piece of the floor.
"What are you doing?" She asks. I answer her while I continue to rip up the floor until o finally find a spot under the floor, where there's a little metal box.
I lift the box up and plant it in the table. "I put this box together when I was a little kid. Chloe laughs when she reads what I wrote on it years ago.
Don't open this box until you have a super hot model girlfriend.
I laugh. "Wanna open it?" I ask, she begins to open it with a smile. As she rips off the lid she looks at the content. There is a book of matches, candles, stale chips, two cans of flat pop, and some napkins. There is also a little thing wrapped in paper. I tell her to open it and she laughs when there's a small mood ring inside. I take the ring and get on my knees.
"Chloe Rose Williams, will you be my girlfriend?" I say awkwardly. She laughs and nods at the same time. I take her right glove off and put the ring on her right ring finger. She giggles. I started to lead down the ladder. I wave get over and grab her hand when she gets near. She laughs. We go back across the fallen tree. I get down first and then grab her hand as she jumps off.
We start to walk down the sidewalk and our fingers intertwine with each other. We talk ask laugh, we look at the clouds as we walk, pointing out what they look like. When we funnily get to her house to part ways, she looks at me.
"Do you really not wanna marry me?" She asks. I turn around and start walking. Before I get to far, I start to answer.
"Not yet."
