"You swore in church," Miles said, leaning on my locker the next day in school. It was lunch and Angiie wasn't at school.
"She upset me."
"You swore in church. I'm not even like that Bree, I know my limits."
"Don't 'Bree' me."
"Annie, you know what you did was wrong and for me being Miles- me. Miles -It would be wrong not to comment you on it. I mean as much as I swear I can't possibly think of swearing in church. That is where I draw the line. You out of all people I would never expect it."
"I was mad--"
"That's not an excuse--"
"When did you start to take charge in this friendship?"
"When you started to act irresponsible."
"Excuse me?" I raised my voice a bit, "You're the one that brought the drugs to my house remember that," he quickly looked around to see if anyone caught what I had just said. No one did, then he looked back at me, jaw clenched. I kept going, "and you're the one that was telling me to try it--"
"Bring your voice down," he said through clenched teeth.
I stepped up to him, eyes narrowed, voice quiet, and head bent back to see him.
"You were the one that kept swearing around me no matter how many times I tell you to watch your language. It was only a matter of time before I ended up swearing too."
"You don't have to swear, Bree. I'm trying to be a role model--"
"You're not doing a very good job."
Just then, Jordan walked up.
"Are we giving lectures?" He said.
"Not now, Jordan."
"What, you don't want to hear me tell you how irresponsible you've been lately? Ditching class, messing up the house, taking mollies now eh--?"
Miles' eyes widened.
"How'd you--"
"Yea, I know about that. See how careless you are? I found one on the threshold of your room. Lucky our parents or those kids' mom didn't see it."
"Jordan--"
"I'm not gonna tell anyone. I'm not a snake. But you need to get your act together before one of them discerners start talkin' your business."
Miles laughed under his breath, "Vangie Jones."
He means Evangelist Jones. Vangie just sounds better. It flows.
"Okaaay," I said.
And with that, he walked away. I watched him walk away, then looked up at Miles.
"So you gonna listen to him?"
I hesitated, "I think I have to."
"You trust him?"
"He's my brother."
"He's your brother...." he nodded.
"Don't be like that--" I leaned my head on the locker.
"Be like what? You don't want me to be hurt because you chose to listen to your brother who told you the same thing I did? I've been telling you this stuff from time and then all of a sudden your brother walks up and then it gets through to you? Be like what Bree?"
"You're hurt?" Now I felt bad.
He rolled his eyes, "you're missing the point."
"I'm so sorry-- but I live with him I can't just say whatever and have him use it against me."
