It wasn't so cold outside like the other days this past week. It was snowing though; for the fourth time this week. We were walking in the park with the boys, who seemed to enjoy it a lot. Especially when we let them go down the icy slide. I watched as they ran over to the rocking horses and tried to use them, but they were frozen and wouldn't work. I reminisced the time when I was younger with Miles; when we came here in the summer and was playing on things we were too big for. I snapped out of it when I saw S.J and Keenan racing too far and had to call out to them,
"Sean-John!....Keenan!.....Wait right there for us, please!"
"They get their speed from me," Joseph laughed.
"Yea, 'cause we all know I don't run, ahaha!"
Just as we caught up to them, I saw two people in the distance. They were holding hands and I heard faint laughter. I tried to look harder as I held onto Sean-John's shoulder. The two people were getting closer; they looked like a couple and I noticed there was a little girl with them. She looked around four years old. The most logical guess would be that this was a family. After the accident years ago, I couldn't remember much, but there was something about this guy that looked familiar. Then it struck me the second he was close enough to us.
"Miles.." I whispered.
Then he looked up in my direction and made eye contact with me, bewildered and my heart was racing because I didn't even think I was right but it turned out I was.
"Who's Miles?" Joseph whispered.
I was speechless....I didn't even know how to tell him; what to tell him. Miles was watching me and the lady beside him noticed. She started looking at me curiously. I read her lips say "who's that, babe?", then he looked down at her and back to me. He didn't look much different but he had a few changes. He was taller for one, and his hair was curly...small curls...soft, silky looking curls. His face was a lot more masculine and mature, his skin was pure as always, and his eyes...lighter than before; it was like they had changed colour. The lady beside him was really pretty. I didn't get a chance to really look at her because he told her something and she and the little girl went over to the swings which happened to be iceless. I touched Joseph's arm and told him to go to the car with the kids. He went.
Miles began to walk up to me, slowly.
"How much do you remember?" He said, cautiously.
"Not much..." I replied with my inside voice.
"You seem to have remembered my name."
"Mhmm," I nodded.
By that time he was a comfortable distance away and I wasn't so sure if I wanted him to hug me.
"How have you been?"
"I uhh.....I've been good. What about you? How are you?"
"I'm good." He rubbed his hands together and then put them in his pockets. "Those are your children?"
I watched as my family walked away and smiled, "yea..." I looked back at him. "Keenan and Sean-John."
"And uh, what about him? Your boyfriend?"
"Um, no, actually. He's my husband."
"Oh, you're married now. Congratulations."
"Thank you. What about you?"
"Oh yea, my two girls: Hannah and Tia--."
"Tia..." I whispered.
He smiled.
"That's my middle name.." I said.
"Yea it is. I uhh, after your accident I didn't want to move on without my best friend. I mean, you were like family; my little sister. Now you're just a little bit more than that."
"I'm your daughter.." I laughed.
He laughed a bit too. "Yea, I guess, if you put it that way."
"You goin' to church?" I asked.
"Yea, the same one we grew up in. I'm attending regularly now. Tia's on the children's choir and she loves it."
"That's nice."
"What about you? You back in church?"
"Yea, I went back. Of course not the same one ever since that night with that uuuhh....the lady-- the old lady. I don't remember exactly. I don't remember much."
"That's good, that's good...the church part not the memory part."
"Yea.."
There was an awkward silence before he spoke again.
"Bree I'm s--"
"Breanne." I cut him off, rubbing the bridge of my nose.
He sighed with a slight smile and continued. "Breanne I'm--I'm sorry."
I looked at him dumbfounded. "For what? What are you...." I shook my head confused. I wanted to remember, I wanted to know what he was talking about. "What are you talking about?"
"Everything-- just...everything I put you through."
"Oh.." I looked down at my feet.
"I wish things were different. I mean... for years I couldn't live with the fact that I did this to you--"
"You can lead a horse to water but you can't force it to drink." I looked up into his eyes. "It's okay. I'm okay now." I smiled.
I glanced behind him and saw his wife watching us as she pushed Tia on the swings and felt that it was time for me to get going.
"I should uh....get going." I said, gesturing behind me.
He looked at his wife and then back to me.
"Yea me too. It was nice seeing you again, Breanne."
"Take care of yourself, Miles."
"I will," he smiled.
"Good." I nodded.
As I turned to walk away I wished I could have hugged him but something inside me just said "too soon". So I kept walking....and walking....and walking....and walking....and....walking....until I heard him call from behind me,
"I still love you, Bree!...I always have!"
I swung my head around stunned at what i had just heard.
"You what?!"
