Chapter Twenty Four
Gold and Silver
“Your majesty,” I said remembering in time that he was still royalty.
“I knew you weren’t what you seemed.” He said taking a few steps into the temple. His amber eyes moved over the walls in slight awe. “I did not expect you to be this important though.”
“Why are you here air demon?” Cerulean asked boldly.
Xander looked at the small boy for a moment and seemed to dismiss him, then he narrowed his eyes. “Dragon,” he murmured under his breath. “I’ve come to visit the priestess and speak with her.” He nodded in my direction.
Cerulean cast his blue eyes on me. I smiled at him. “It’s alright Cerulean.”
He glided away to his sister’s side taking down and replacing scrolls. They looked at us from the corner of their eyes. It felt odd to have such small people protective of me. It would take a while for me to get used to the Caynes.
“Did my father know what you were, when he first came up with this teaching Xander human sensibilities project?”
I shrugged, “He let on if he knew. I think he might have suspected at least. Air demons are sensitive.”
Xander cast his gaze to a wall in thought. I stayed quiet knowing he was going to speak soon. “Would you come back to the palace?” He finally spoke. I didn’t expect him to ask that. He looked at me waiting for an answer. There was something in his eyes, an almost pleading look that he seemed to be trying to hold back. I smiled at that. It was odd to see him in any soft emotion. I was used to my aloof grandfather. This teenaged version of him was, unusual, and refreshing; such a different side to him. Age and time really seemed to change people.
“Of course, I’ll visit when I can.”
He nodded and opened his mouth to say something else when a scream ripped through the air. Xander turned to the opening of the temple and scented the air. Within seconds he had bounded through the temple and out into the sun. It made his armour glitter for a moment before he zipped out of my vision.
The Caynes came to my side before I could think about what just happened. “Another shadow creature.” Ivory said taking a firm grip on my wrist.
“Another one?” I asked in disbelief.
“Yes, they normally move around in small groups.” Ivory pulled on my wrist. “We must get you somewhere safe.”
“But, can’t I help?” I looked down at both of them.
Cerulean looked towards the opening then back at me. “Air demons are formidable creatures; are they not?”
I bit on the inside of my cheek and nodded.
I sat on the narrow spiral staircase with Ivory. Her brother was in the temple keeping an eye on things. This was a hiding space, and a small one at that. It was hidden behind one of the pillars carved into the marble wall. Now I understood why the temple walls were so thick. I could hear nothing of what was going on outside though. We just sat in suspense for what felt like half an hour before a faint tap at the bottom of the staircase.
I stepped from behind the kidding place to see Laien, Michael and Xander standing in the temple, looking at me. For a moment I considered going back into the staircase, however small it might be.
“You’re safe.” They all said at the same time.
I widened my eyes and tried my best not to laugh when they looked at each other in confusion. Only nodding to their statement I moved closer to Cerulean. It felt odd being stared at.
“Isabel, you seem to attract monsters like flies.” Michael mumbled. My mind flashed back to the vampire incident. “We will have to watch you more closely.”
Laien nodded.
“I would gladly post one or two gaurds here, if there is need.” Xander added.
“If you all feel like it then fine.” I said after a moment of thought.
