Chapter 14
Lines
I walked with Lady Raiche down through the ballroom doors and into the gardens. She said nothing for a few minutes until we reached a small pond. She sat down on the bench there and motioned for me to sit next to her.
“Now tell me,” she took me hand in hers, “What has that old dog Iola brought you here for?”
I laughed at her calling him an old dog. “I’m supposed to be a companion for Xander; to teach him about people.”
Two slender, dark brows drew together on her face and she looked at me. “But you have more power than that in you.”
I tilted my head. I didn’t have any powers though. “I’m not so sure about that.”
“Trust me.” She sighed then looked away at the pond. A few fish swam near the surface sending ripples through the water. The moons, both large and bright were reflected in it. “This country is dying.”
I sat up and looked at her.
“Iola is trying to get through this peacefully but that might not work.” Her shoulders slumped a little.
“What do you mean?” I couldn’t help the curiosity in my voice.
She looked slightly shocked. “You must be living under a rock. Most people know about Lucifer and his want of this land.”
I almost chocked on my own spit. “Lucifer?”
“The wolf demon tyrant. He is trying to wage war with Iola but he’s far young and ignorant. This will all just end terribly. I can feel it in my bones.” She looked at the ground as she spoke. “The only thing that can really help us is the Priestess of Light.”
My eyes went wide at this news. I was supposed to save everyone.
“I know what you are.” She whispered softly. “I saw you across the room and I could smell it on you. The power.”
I had no idea what to say. I was in shock. No one else had been able to tell.
She looked back at me again. Her bright eyes were tear filled. “Don’t worry, I won’t harm you.” Her had touched my cheek and held it there the way my mother would. “My sister was the last priestess.”
“Oh my god.” The last priestess had been Sharoudain of pure blood. She was Lady Raiche’s sister.
“Mother!”
We both looked up startled at the sudden cry. There was someone running towards us. He was tall and lean framed and as he came nearer I saw that he had the same dark hair and bright eyes as Raiche.
“Mother, I’ve been...” His words died off.
He just stood staring at me. And I stared back. The emptiness that had been crowding me earlier was gone. Instead his image filled it. His dark hair was two inches past his shoulders, his brows and lashes were dark as the rest of his hair and his eyes were the exact same shade as his mother’s. He looked like he was about twenty five. His shoulders were broad and he was just tall, and beautiful, and perfect.
I didn’t know why I just couldn’t stop looking at him. And he just stood there looking back at me. Then he took a few steps forward and sank to his knees right in front of me where I was sitting. He reached out and pulled me to him quickly, making me fall off the bench.
“Laien, what are you doing?” I heard Lady Raiche ask but I couldn’t look away. “Laien!”
He didn’t look away from me either but he answered, “This is my Isaraya.”
I was his Isaraya? It felt right, Isarayo. I had found him.
